Falcons got their new middle linebacker

Falcons agreed to terms with free agent MLB Lofa Tatupu on an undisclosed contract.

It's likely an incentive-laden, one-year deal after Tatupu was unable to get on the field in 2011 coming off of twin knee surgeries. He worked out for the Saints and Titans before visiting the Falcons on Friday. His signing all but assures MLB Curtis Lofton will be allowed to walk in free agency. Released by the Seahawks on the eve of training camp last summer, Pro Football Focus rated Tatupu as one of the league's worst linebackers in 2010. He'll turn 30 in November.

Man, that was a pretty quick fall from grace for Lofa. He was gangbusters until those injuries hit. I can't believe they are going to let their, arguably, best defensive player walk. They should be adding to that side not subtracting, but this is sort of the nfl now: you start with a bunch of young talent and try to win something before it gets broken up by free agency.

wait! aren't you guys worried??? maybe they see something in him that we don't.

maybe all he needs is a fresh start! maybe he can come in and make that defense respectable.

lulz

this logic only works when considering free agents for our team. you know better than that

    • Well, hope they're not worried about a torn Labrum or Rotator Cuff, as someone who went through that myself, I know those don't have anything show up on X-Rays but from the MRI, so this is kinda a nothing update, hope it's not a tear or his season is already over if they decide to do surgery now. Which is basically what would be needed to get him to 100% for the start of next season's training camp if it's a labrum.  If he plays the season with it and then does surgery, he's not going to be ready for camp and probably not the start of the season either.
    • I always try to not pay much attention to a team’s preseason win/loss record. The 1982 Washington and 2021 LA Rams both lost every game in the preseason and went on to win the Super Bowl, whereas the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns both won every game in reason and went on to lose every regular season game. There’s many examples of teams that lose in preseason that go on to have good seasons, but equally there are teams that lose in preseason and that continues in the regular season. Which will we be?  I think our floor is a handful of wins, while our ceiling will probably be around the 9-10 win mark. The latter will require significant improvement from the whole team and coaching staff, and will also need Bryce to play like the QB we drafted him to be. I want to be optimistic and predict a winning season, but it’s really difficult as a Panthers fan!
    • Cos he looks much better?
