Saint's Vilma May Have Cooked His Own Goose

Slow day on the forum so why not -

If he gets suspended for half the season which I expect him to be, I think hes gone.I wonder how many players theyre going to lose over this.?

The Saints have shown interest in Curtis Lofton, a league source said Thursday, adding to a growing list of linebackers the team has scheduled interviews with.

Multiple outlets also are reporting that David Hawthorne and Joe Mays.

Lofton, 25, is scheduled to visit with New Orleans this coming weekend.

In four years with Atlanta as the team's middle linebacker, Lofton compiled 492 tackles, four sacks, 15 passes defensed and three interceptions.

The move could mean the Saints are beginning to look at moving on from Jonathan Vilma. At 29, Vilma is older and has had more wear and tear on his body. He spent five weeks this season sidelined with a knee injury that eventually required surgery.

But just as important as Vilma's health is that he has a large salary cap figure, upwards of $7.6 million this year and $8.1 million next year.

I just hope that if those 22-27 players are suspended less than 8 games then we get at least one game versus the saints early in the season. It would suck if we ended up playing them 2 times in 4 weeks late in the season like with the Falcons last year.

Not saying I don't think we can beat the Taints with their starters, just that I'd take that gimme W against their scab team any day of the week.

if multiple starters are suspended, they will spread them out over the whole year so they are not crippled.

Can they do that though? I read here that Benson might try it but that it would be more a matter of asking Goodell permission.

Player Suspensions

I believe Benson should meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell and ask him to be allowed some input into when the suspensions are going to occur. If there are multiple players involved, as is very likely, it could put the team at a tremendous competitive disadvantage if they miss time all at once. Goodell might say no, but you have to ask.

This is all assuming that the suspensions are less than a season, which they very well might not be.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
