The Case For Coples At 9...

I know work ethic is a huge problem... I know Peppers took off plays, and I've even heard comparisons of work ethic to Randy Moss...But I'll take the hall of Fame numbers they have produced and pure dominance at their respectful positions over a guy that tries really hard and isn't as physically gifted as coples...

At 6'6 and 285 pounds running a 4.6 forty as his low it's almost disturbing how freakish that is...All of 2010 this guy played inside and was dominant. This is the exact size we need on the outside as well as even inside to help in the run defense. A lot of scouting reports I've read say he doesn't have the quickness for a 4-3 defensive end. A 4.6 forty IS quick enough for a 4-3 DE, but imagine if Carolina got this guy to lose 10-20 pounds in the offseason, were talking 265, 6'6 and most likely a 4.5 forty. If he came into the combine at those measurables hes a top 5 pick guarenteed.

Here's the best part about all of this, Julius Peppers weighed in at 283 pounds, he stood at 6 foot 6 and ran a 4.74 at the combine...coples measurable's stack up higher then Pepper's...As a defense getting a healthy Beason, and Thomas Davis back how can you not be frothing at the mouth for Coples. He had 8.5 sacks in 2010 playing inside! The guy had one down year! You can put him inside or out, and other personel will allow us to experiment with him. We can put him inside and have Hardy and Johnson off the edge, or slide him outside and have him and Johnson off the edge.

I know your going to jump down my throat when I say this, but alot of our poor run defense was also due to our end's. I love charles Johnson, but he is a smaller frame and sometimes gets blow out of the play versus the run, Hardy's got great size but to me isn't a starting DE he was taken late for a reason. Does that mean he can't rotate in? No, hes a perfect rotation end, but we are missing the dominating end that Peppers was. Not only do I feel coples measures up to Pepper's physically I feel he will play like a Jason pierre Paul and explode onto the scene.

I think we may grab Coples. As much as people harp on how bad our DT's played, at the end of the day they were two of Rivera's very first draft picks, and I doubt he gives up on them so quickly. DT isn't the instant NCAA-NFL transition that people think it is. I really, really believe that Rivera will give McClain and Fua a minimum of another season or two to succeed before cutting ties and drafting replacements.

Coples shows the kind of strength and speed on tape that should qualify him to go in the top 10 of this draft. When Coples wanted to get to the QB, teams were forced to double team him. When he didn't give a care, it was like he wasn't even on the field. So is he going to be Superman throwing people around, or Clark Kent fixing his glasses? Who the hell knows, and that's why he's risky.

Poe doesn't show much of anything on tape, but he has elite straight line speed for a man of his size, quick feet, and his ability in the weight room suggests he has elite strength in certain areas, but turn on the tape and you'll see that terrible o-linemen have had their way with him. By tape I mean crappy youtube videos.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
