Some Don't Want Cam Scoring On The Ground ?

I don't mind him scrambling but I want to cut down on his dedicated running plays etc, because I worry about what will happen in a few years. I don't think we should ever tell him, "Don't run." But I would like to see us leaning on our running backs for our designed run plays, and letting him use his legs to punish defenses who don't account for him on passing plays. I also think he needs to not leave his feet at all really.

If its third and goal on the 1 at a key point in a game, I don't have a problem with them running Cam. But generally speaking, I hope that Cam can run the ball less over the next few seasons than he did this past year. Yes, he could be injured standing in the pocket, but thats what QB's are suppose to do. Running the ball 10-15 times a game dramatically increases the chances of him being injured. I want the opposing defense to be aware of Cam's running threat, but that doesn't mean we have to do it a lot.

Btw, I am talking about designed run plays, not a play where he can't find a open receiver, and decides to take off. He should have the greenlight then, especially as he gets more experience.

I love when Cam scores on the ground but he took a lot of punishment on the goal line last season. It'll just be nice to have a guy like Tolbert who can take a bit of the load off of him at the goal line. I love when Cam rushes in the open field though.

Cam should definitely still get some goalline opportunities as an extra weapon though ofcourse.

You take away the designed running plays for Cam and you take away the special qualities he has. I was at the TB game were he rattled off that 50 yd run. Once in the secondary... Those DB including Safeties couldn't handle him. While I agree, to some extent, that he may get injured you cannot completely shut down the designed plays. Keep running them and the defense has to respect it. Take it away and we lose the advantage of what is Cam Newton.

The only thing I don't like is the QB dives where he's taking some hits, when he was in the open field and decided to run he protected himself pretty well and slid down. He also sometimes HAS to run if someone on the offensive line can't block a guy or misses a guy.

Cam still needs to run, just do less of it. That's the beauty of adding talent around Newton, we'll be able open up our vertical passing attack as well as incorporate DWill, JStew, and Tolbert to a point Newton will get passing TD's instead of rushing TD's.

It is not just the risk of injury. The constant big hits he takes on the goal line will take its toll in his body and likely shorten his career. The fewer shots he takes the better.

We have stud rb's...let them take the goal line shots.

I remember McNabb running around like crazy and breaking down defenses in his 1st couple of seasons. But when injuries started to pile on he wasn't nearly as effective and was forced to be more of a pocket passer. McNabb was a big man and still couldn't handle the pounding a dual threat quarterback in the NFL.

Comparing Cam Newton to McNabb hahahahahahahaah

Newton>>>>>>>>>>McNabb

He definetly took a lot of goal line dives last year. Made most of em but missed a few.

He took some hard hits on those few. Remember I seen him do a copter spin at the 2 against Washington? Correct me if I'm wrong on that game reference.

I'm all for Cam scoring on the ground. Unlike most people here I love to play FF. I had the whole Carolina offense last year Cam, Smith, Stewart, Olsen. I actually got 1st in my FF league and got to brag about how good our offense was.

I don't want Cam getting hurt though. I really wanna see Tolbert get some of that goal line action this year.

To me, unless there is a glaring hole that he can scoot through to pick up a big gain, or unless there's no open option for him to pass to, I think I would prefer they do designed run plays for Cam just enough to keep the threat legit int he minds of the defenders. When you think about it, the threat is really all you need to accomplish the same thing. Cam may not run it, but if a defender knows he can and isn't afraid to, then it's something they still have to defend agains. That opens stuff up for the other guys.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
