Plaxico Burress Was On Nfl Radio And The Topic Of The Panthers Came Up

Adam Shein and Rich Gannon were interviewing him as he is a free agent. They were discussing how things were going and whether or not he has had any discussions with teams. Adam and Gannon had several minutes prior to this discussed with a call-in fan that the Panthers didn't really address the 2nd wide receiver spot and they were not that high on LaFell or Gettis and thought Adams was more of a returner than a receiver.

So you can see where this is headed, another one of those threads........

Anyway they discussed Miami, and Oakland and then Adam mentioned Carolina and how that would be a great fit. We could use a big physical receiver across from Smith. Plaxico said he hadn't had any discussions with Hurney but did say that Cam was a friend and he talked to him frequently. He was extremely complementary about our offense and said he would love to play here. He noted that Smitty was one of his favorite players and he loved the way he played and how tough he was. He even said he had family down this way and that we were an up and coming franchise.

They asked him if GMs would be scared off by his record and the whole gun issue in New York and of course he said that he couldn't change the past but had learned from it and hadn't been in trouble since.

So yeah I am going to ask the question?? Would he be worth signing to a vet minimum contract with incentives on a 2 year deal?? He had 8 Tds last year and had 600 yards. He would be a great insurance piece if a receiver went down and at 6'5" and 235 is still a match-up nightmare for teams.

Best of all North Carolina has such relaxed gun laws he wouldn't have even been charged here. I think for a minimum contract given he is 34, it would be well worth the risk.

What say you??????

Wouldn't be dumb to take a shot if he wasn't too pricey. I really have confidence in Gettis/LaFell but another veteran wide receiver with size could be a difference maker on offense.

He's not a terrible receiver - it wouldn't hurt my feelings if he was here for some stupidly low number. The question, I guess, is do you get him for a stupidly low number or does he think he deserves a ton of money from someone?

My assumption is he still thinks he deserves a ton of money from someone.

Not sold on LaFell or Gettis??? Wasnt it reported that the panthers were impressed with LaFell and expected a breakout year from him Next season?!...anyway wouldnt bother me, for vet min. but i think it would hurt the young guys. Plus Plex is nothing more than a redzone guy.

I wouldn't mind it. LaFell will be decent until he proves to be great. And time and time again this board busts a nut over a guy who looked decent in his first season. We have NO clue what Gettis will do after coming back from injury. This board acts like the kid is the next Larry Fitzgerald.

Idk to be honest

I think a lot of people is seriously sleeping on Gettis

I think more people are overrating him than sleeping on him.

Plax would be a great redzone target at least for a year. Gettis' value would be stretching the field in between the 20s

Plaxico! I had him on my fantasy team last year and he was somewhat disappointing. Other than that, I've got no beef. I think 3 Wr line ups with Smith, Lafell, Gettis and Burress would be a hell of a lot better than Smith, Lafell, Gettis and Adams.

More likely people are neither overrating OR underrating Gettis - he s is still very much an unknown quantity. We're all making assumptions...I don't really think we have enough info on Gettis to either overrate OR underrate him.

Plax and Gettis are very different receivers though. I'm not sure Plax being here (if he were) impacts Gettis as much as people seem to think it would.

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
