Did Panthers Find Their Superman On Defense?(Nfl.com)

Recommended Posts

The

Carolina Panthers

couldn't have hit a bigger home run in last year's draft. Armed with the top overall pick, they grabbed Cam Newton and watched the rookie quarterback transform their offense. The team went from scoring an NFL-worst 12.2 points per game in 2010 to 25.4 last season, tied for fifth best in the league.N

ewton didn't do this alone, but he came close. Nobody wanted to deal with Carolina's offense by season's end, but the Panthers were made human by their defense.

We can't give Carolina a top grade in this draft because they failed to address the defensive tackle position, but there's no mistake about the first round: They hit it big with Luke Kuechly.

Just as Newton did at quarterback, Kuechly turns the linebacker position from a weakness into a strength, based on the health of

Jon Beason.

Kuechly projects as a middle backer long-term, but will likely start on the weakside with Beason lined up inside. Kuechly is praised for his versatility and steady play; a smart defender who spoke to Panthers reporters about his love of preparation. He's mature,

but said, "You can be a different person when you play. You don't have to be nice. You can change your mind-set a little bit."

"He's exactly what we thought he is," coach Ron Rivera

told the team's official site after Friday's rookie

We making up names for our LB core now?

Beason - Beast (already established)

Kuechly - Clark Kent? (kinda weak nickname)

TD - ?

Andy - ?

Think we just need a group nickname, like mt rushmore or something not that gay

(just trying to start something)

    • Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.
    • Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.
    • Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
