SB Nation's Safety Rankings (Panthers 30th)

I would just like to point out the fact that anyone who states "Godfrey was horrible in coverage because he was attempting to help other players such as munnerlyn" or some other such nonsense is posting completely speculative nonsense. The reality is that you don't really have any idea on whether he was covering for someone else or just flat out blew the coverage. The only people who would know for certain are those who call the plays.

The ONLY thing that you can know for certain is that Godfrey has been responsible for multiple horribly blown coverages and suspect tackling.

In 2010 he wasn't that bad, the entire team as a whole was bad but Godfrey actually had a decent season. He recorded five picks in that season after covering for other people.

I remember that most of those 5 picks were more horseshit luck than they were great plays made by being in position. As I recall, there were some horrible throws where he was rewarded for being out of position and a some deflected balls where he was rewarded for being late to the play. An interception is a great thing, but it isn't always indicative of a great play - if that makes sense.

Tough to say now, but it would not surprise me one bit to see us draft a safety high next off-season. I love the front office bringing in competition at the position to get the best out of what we already have on our roster, but I am not sold. Hoping two step-up in a BIG way this season and are at least serviceable in coverage and run-support. It will be crucial that our defense gets off the field for this team's success and I am hoping we are able to force turnovers regularly to give Cam and co. the opportunity to work with a short field and turn turnovers into points.

When you have to cover for someone else, you are going to look like sh*t. Point blank.

In the 2010-2011 season, Godfrey was the only bright spot on the team.

The primary duty of a safety is to assist in coverage. If you can't do it, you aren't a good safety.

I agree. If the reports are true, Mark Barron was actually ahead of Luke Kuechly on our draft board.

I see some of your concern's, but I can list numerous players who I would take Godfrey over.

I can too. They are really bad players though.

I loved his skill set....but he that is a moot point now. he doesn't play good football.

What I will say, you can roll with Godfrey as long as you have a good safety beside him and a two good cornerback's. However, I don't think you could roll with Martin even if you had a good safety beside him because of his flat out inability to cover the tight end.

To be honest, I could see Godfrey greatly benefiting from a good safety playing next to him as well as two good corners.

Regardless, both will be replaced eventually, but Martin needs to be replaced before Godfrey as he is the weaker of the two.
