Sporting News: Expect Panthers defense to improve

Carolina Panthers

2011 numbers: 27th in scoring defense (26.8 points per game), 28th (377.6 yards per game) in total defense.

Stopping the run was a huge issue last season, and a big reason for that was injuries up the middle. Three-time Pro Bowl inside linebacker Jon Beason was missed most after suffering a season-ending left Achilles' injury in Week 1. Before that blow, the Panthers lost newly signed starting tackle Ron Edwards to a torn triceps in training camp.

Both of those returning veterans will get help from youngsters around them. Third-year left end Greg Hardy and second-year tackle Terrell McClain will step into increased roles up front next to Edwards and top pass rusher Charles Johnson.

The linebackers, however will be the core playmakers of this defense, which shouldn't be a surprise on a Ron Rivera-coached team. Beason comes back as a tackling machine, and first-round pick Luke Kuechly will also cover plenty of ground. Kuechly's coverage skills and instincts against the pass will help the Panthers better control backs and tight ends—a must in the NFC South.

The Panthers retain a familiar secondary, but their near-wholesale changes in the front seven will make the difference.

This is the only positive article I have seen printed up about our defense. Good job, Sporting News!!!

Forgive me if this offends anyone, but our secondary has the iq of two year old, and at least two of them might be characterized at mentally retarded. Yes, I'm talking to you Munnerlyn and Martin.

Godfrey isn't too far ahead of Munnerlyn.

I also wonder what it's like to be Chris Gamble, knowing that he is the only competent player in the entire secondary.

I am going to assume your mishap is that of a typing error and not a reflection of ones own IQ. Ironic, none the less.

Carry on, now.

The first part of this post is irony defined.

Munnerlyn is far from retarded, he just can't contend with his lack of size.

Also, not to over do the subject. But, shouldn't that be, Godfrey isn't to far ahead of Munny? Cuz you know, back before ritalin, there was corporal punishment. And the Pledge of Allegiance, and jungle jims, dodgeball, redrover...

    • Dude, I think I might be having Jarvy withdrawals... I ripped the sleeves off of all of my t-shirts in my sleep last night. Every bite of my Alpha-Bita cereal spelled Seth, this morning. And, I took 7 naps before lunch. I'm losing it guys! Jarvy's Jaunty Band of Jaggoffs are getting more play than he is... smh Team Canada doesn't treasure Jarvis the way he deserves. He should take his band down to Liechtenstein, get a bag of passports, and start his own Olympic team! The raw animal magnetism of Jarvilicious will bring in a handful of NHLers on its own. And, since the IOC believes in collective punishment, he could have his pick of the rookies. Then, just fill out the rest of the roster with the maple blooded great white northerners who couldn't make the top squad. Can't trust this assembled awesomery to just any old Liechtensteinien with a clipboard and a whistle. Gotta bring in a legend worthy of this gold medal gambit. A hockey HOFer with the balls to buck the system and the aura to match our maverick. Huere geil, Vaduz!!! 2030 Gold Medal guaranteed!
    • Tennessee isn't trading a QB on a 2nd round contract that has starting experience.  That's bad business.
    • OT is the top priority as it is both an immediate and future need.  I wouldn't be past trading up slightly to get the guy we want.  You need that rookie contract right now.  Icky is a dead 17.5 million for the season.  Morton is 20+ mil for the season, Hunt is 20+ mil for the season.  There needs to be forward thinking regarding the future.   Caleb Lomu is a left Tackle, he's a solid prospect, he may be the best pick for us now and in the future.  I would seriously consider cutting Hunt after 2026, and let Lomu and Icky fight for the LT job, loser moves inside.  Icky's future may be at guard after this injury anyway.  If Damien Lewis keeps up his level of play he will need to be paid sooner rather than later.  Yosh and BC can be our top two depth OL at an affordable price.  You will need to look at OT again in 2027. Getting an EDGE for the sake of getting an EDGE outside of the top 10 is pretty risky.  I wouldn't be against eyeing someone like Cashius Howell, Derrick Moore, or TJ Parker in the 2nd (even if we trade a future pick to move up) or DDS in the third. I'd love to see us try to sign both Leo Chenal and Matt Millano in FA.   Chenal for the blitzing element we are missing from our LB corps and Millano for his elite coverage.  They could both work in tandem.  Remember, our FO has deep ties to both KC and Buffalo. I love thinking about the draft, but until Free Agency hits, we are clueless.  Looking at the strength of FA and the draft, OL is priority #1, LB #2, and EDGE #3.  We know what happens to Bryce when protection falls apart.
