Sporting News: Expect Panthers defense to improve

Recommended Posts

Why does everyone think Godfrey sucks...he was really good last year..Martin was the problem

He doesn't suck, but he wasn't really good either, he was average.

I personally think he will better with good pass rushers, a healthy linebacker corp, and an overall better secondary.

Hopefully Norman and Nakamura can step up for the Panthers this year in the secondary.

You could be right. Get a better team around him and Godfrey may play his position at a higher level. I think he cheats to much. He is trying to help before the help is needed. So when help is actually needed elsewhere, he can't get back into the play. Let him be more of a S and he could improve dramatically.

I have always had hope for Godfrey. It is getting close to time to rethink my priorities. And yeah, that is a threat.

To be fair, he is basically saying, "Secondary will still suck but at least the front seven should be a lot better!"

Which I'd agree with. I'm not really worried about our run defense much. But our pass defense? Ugh.

I say this because in 2009, Godfrey had his best year by far; and it was a damn good year.

2009 Key Notes

- Sherrod Martin was a rookie and though he played in all 16 games, but he only started for five of them.

- Richard Marshall was the starting right corner and he also had the best year of his career (recording a career high in interceptions), which really helped out Godfrey (Marshall is a better corner than Munnerlyn, he just isn't as good as he thinks he is).

- Chris Gamble once again was his usual self and had another solid campaign.

- Chris Harris was the main strong safety (he rotated some with Martin), and like Marshall; Harris also had one of his best years as a pro.

- The Panthers were able to use two 2011-2012 starters as depth in 2009, in Munnerlyn and Martin. The Panthers also had other good role players in the secondary like Quinton Teal, Dante Wesley, and C.J. Wilson.

- The Panthers linebackers consisted of Jon Beason, James Anderson, Thomas Davis (for seven games), Na'il Diggs, Landon Johnson, Dan Connor, and Jordan Senn. This was one of the best linebacker corps that we've had.

- The Panthers pass rush consisted of Julius Peppers, Tyler Brayton, Damione Lewis, Hollis Thomas, Tank Tyler, Charles Johnson, Everette Brown, Nick Hayden, Louis Leonard, and Hilee Taylor. Once again, this was a really good pass rushing unit.

The point is, if you surround Godfrey with the assets that I mentioed above; you will see that he is capable of being an above average player.

If you take this into account, I think anyone will understand that Godfrey plays better
