Adam Schein's Preseason Myths (Myth = Panthers are Good)

The Myth: The Carolina Panthers will win the Super Bowl.

The Truth: Carolina will finish last in the NFC South.

I appreciate Ryan Kalil's moxie, taking out a full-page advertisement in the Charlotte Observer to declare that the Carolina Panthers would win Super Bowl XLVII. Kalil didn't back away when we pressed him on SiriusXM Blitz on SiriusXM NFL Radio. However, he's absolutely nuts. I know quarterback Cam Newton and Carolina are a trendy playoff pick. I think Carolina is the fourth-best team in its own division.

The New Orleans Saints*** are in a chaotic state, dealing with the stench of the "bounty" scandal and the season-long suspensions of coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma. But they still employ quarterback Drew Brees and are loaded on offense. Steve Spagnuolo is a major upgrade over Gregg Williams at defensive coordinator. The Saints*** have more talent and experience than Carolina.

It's well-documented that the Atlanta Falcons struggle in January, but they don't skip a beat in the regular season. Quarterback Matt Ryan and receivers Julio Jones andRoddy White comprise a more polished passing attack than Newton, Steve Smith and Co. in Carolina. New Atlanta defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is a gem, to boot.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quit on coach Raheem Morris last season. Greg Schiano changes the culture. He's the right guy at the right time. Tampa Bay upgraded the offense in a big way this offseason, drafting physical running back Doug Martin, signing difference-making receiver Vincent Jackson and pilfering tackle Carl Nicksfrom New Orleans to solidify the offensive line. Martin is going to get 20 carries per game and will be my pick for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Fellow rookie Mark Barron is a winner at safety, plain and simple. Quarterback Josh Freeman will bounce back under Schiano, offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan and the rest of the new staff. I love Tampa Bay to rebound this year and knock on the playoff door. The Bucs are the surprise team in the division -- and they're better than the Panthers.

I told Kalil when we spoke on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he had raised the bar too high. Carolina won six games last year. Eight wins in 2012 would represent progress. The Panthers still have gaping holes behind Smith at receiver. And the defense has a bunch of question marks, even after the savvy draft pick of linebacker Luke Kuechly. Kalil says he can take criticism because he is "fat, bald and has short arms." I love the self-deprecation. Better to laugh than cry when the Panthers are in the basement.

I honestly don't care. I have a good feeling about this season. anyone who watched our games last year knows that we were mere plays away from being 10-6 instead of 6-10. We were in every contest we played in save for maybe 2 or 3. If our defense plays even marginally better, we will be a playoff team.

Can anyone really take Adam Schein seriously? If it weren't for his unique voice and ridiculous enthusiasm, he wouldn't have a job talking about football. Not even just talking about the Panthers, everything he says is merely to play devils advocate to make things interesting or to go along with blatant certainties. It's pathetic and hard to listen to.

Few outside of the Panthers viewing area think that we will even sniff the playoffs this year. Moreover, they fail to realize the profound effect that injuries had on the team's defense last year. As the defense goes this year, so will we go. Eight games is a safe prediction in my book. But if Beason and Edwards stay healthy and Kuechly is all that is advertised (and there is reason to believe that he is), I think we will win at least 10 games because Cam's development, an under-appreciated Murphy and Tolbert will be good for at least two more than last year.

I have to say that of all of NFL sirius hosts, he is the least knowledgeable. His sidekick now is Rich Gannon who actually disagrees with him. He likes the Panthers and thinks they will compete for the division. Schein seems in love with Tampa and I really don't know why. I just don't think that Schiano will come in and be all that great right away. And we will see what a difference Payton makes in New Orlean's offense. Add that Atlanta has new coordinators across the board and frankly the table is set for the Panthers this year.

    • Dude, I think I might be having Jarvy withdrawals... I ripped the sleeves off of all of my t-shirts in my sleep last night. Every bite of my Alpha-Bita cereal spelled Seth, this morning. And, I took 7 naps before lunch. I'm losing it guys! Jarvy's Jaunty Band of Jaggoffs are getting more play than he is... smh Team Canada doesn't treasure Jarvis the way he deserves. He should take his band down to Liechtenstein, get a bag of passports, and start his own Olympic team! The raw animal magnetism of Jarvilicious will bring in a handful of NHLers on its own. And, since the IOC believes in collective punishment, he could have his pick of the rookies. Then, just fill out the rest of the roster with the maple blooded great white northerners who couldn't make the top squad. Can't trust this assembled awesomery to just any old Liechtensteinien with a clipboard and a whistle. Gotta bring in a legend worthy of this gold medal gambit. A hockey HOFer with the balls to buck the system and the aura to match our maverick. Huere geil, Vaduz!!! 2030 Gold Medal guaranteed!
    • Tennessee isn't trading a QB on a 2nd round contract that has starting experience.  That's bad business.
    • OT is the top priority as it is both an immediate and future need.  I wouldn't be past trading up slightly to get the guy we want.  You need that rookie contract right now.  Icky is a dead 17.5 million for the season.  Morton is 20+ mil for the season, Hunt is 20+ mil for the season.  There needs to be forward thinking regarding the future.   Caleb Lomu is a left Tackle, he's a solid prospect, he may be the best pick for us now and in the future.  I would seriously consider cutting Hunt after 2026, and let Lomu and Icky fight for the LT job, loser moves inside.  Icky's future may be at guard after this injury anyway.  If Damien Lewis keeps up his level of play he will need to be paid sooner rather than later.  Yosh and BC can be our top two depth OL at an affordable price.  You will need to look at OT again in 2027. Getting an EDGE for the sake of getting an EDGE outside of the top 10 is pretty risky.  I wouldn't be against eyeing someone like Cashius Howell, Derrick Moore, or TJ Parker in the 2nd (even if we trade a future pick to move up) or DDS in the third. I'd love to see us try to sign both Leo Chenal and Matt Millano in FA.   Chenal for the blitzing element we are missing from our LB corps and Millano for his elite coverage.  They could both work in tandem.  Remember, our FO has deep ties to both KC and Buffalo. I love thinking about the draft, but until Free Agency hits, we are clueless.  Looking at the strength of FA and the draft, OL is priority #1, LB #2, and EDGE #3.  We know what happens to Bryce when protection falls apart.
