Sean McDermott comments on the #2 CB spot

My biggest problem with our CB situation is that if we lose gamble, we are screwed. there is no decent #2 guy that could possibly step up and play for a short amount of time when needed, no, if gamble goes down, our whole secondary falls to pieces. this has much to do with hurney neglecting the crap out of the position to provide the team with a serviceable guy with experience to play alongside gamble. Captain is tenacious, but tiny, and gets abused regularly. Hogan is apparently a gimp, and Norman is a 5th round rookie.

This is the one area i feel like we needed to address this offseason and we really didn't. I am not horribly horribly upset, just mighty concerned.

I can understand, that concern, but it could be said of a lot of positions on our team, and every other team in the NFL. With the Salary Cap you cant field all pro and all pro backups at ever spot. I can see the concern but reality you just cant prepare for that. You try to do the best you can, but there's not enough money to pay everyone. I would think if we lose someone like Gamble, we would look to find some old vet to bring in and search the trash for a hidden gem. We are not the only team that does that, the good teams are the ones who get lucky on a few trash guys when they lose someone.

Even if it's a joke...that comment kinda rubs me the wrong way. CB is a sensitive position...you don't make a comment like that and chalk it up to "joking" if there's some serious validity to it. I don't expect someone in McDermott's position to make a joke like that to a reporter (or whoever this guy is) about a hole in his own defense. This might be a bad analogy...but if you're a dad and your daughter is a tad bit on the overweight side, you wouldn't make a fat joke about her would you?

I like to think I have a good sense of humor and 99.9% of the time when someone makes a complaint on here, I think they're overreacting...so maybe I'm doing the same thing here. Not that I'm really that upset over it or anything, I just think it's a little in poor taste to make a joke like that about the group of guys you were hired to coach in the first place.

I feel like there's a difference between joking about the #2 CB battle and making fun of your own fat daughter.

    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
