Looking at the Luke Kuechly forced fumble

Looking back at the play I see good news and bad news....

The good news, that play was not Kuechly's to make, but he made it anyways. His job was to contain the outside and keep it inside, which he did. Most other NFL LBs are done at that point, but Luke keeps it in gear and makes the play in the middle. wow.

The bad news. Neblett and Anderson. It was on them to make the play. WIth 62 pulling and heading upfield it is up to Neblett to close that hole quickly, which he didn't. Neblett then is just trying to make the tackle from behind but doesn't. 74 takes on James Anderson and completely takes him out of the play. If not for Luke, that play goes for a possible TD.

The more and more I look at the photos, I wonder if it was Phillips who should've made the play. He was the only LB that wasn't being blocked.

The gap he was assigned to shoot was collapse by Edwards, and Foster bounced it back inside, so it seems as if Phillips should have done a better job of predicting the cut back.

I guess in a John Fox defense he would've been in the wrong, but in this Rivera defense, and with them preaching run fits, he still did his job, but sometimes doing your job isn't enough.

On a zone run like that, typically you want your play-side flowing and stringing it out to either force the runner to cut up into the defense or allow the backside pursuit to run him down. The play-side lineman did a good job of holding the line amd forcing the cutback, meaning this was Neblett and/or Godfrey's (the primary backside pursuit) play to make. Godfrey took a horrible angle - should have come upfield a bit before going flat to the line of scrimmage, which in theory would have put him smack in that cutback lane.

    • As the demand for apartments grows parking is becoming limited and it’s sad. I use to tailgate but I just park at uncc deck now and train in and head to rhino market. My tailgate grill hates me.
    • It simply depends on perspective. CMC, when healthy and on the field, has a higher YPC and YPR than LT. Yes, he's been injury prone, but this is simply a "all quarter-century team." There are certainly different stats and different lists. If this were a list or about a team simply based on longevity, then of course LT wins that every time, but some lists are more subjective and nuanced depending upon what they are, and it's not necessarily a reflection upon a person's ability to analyze sports.
    • From my what I have seen the overwhelming majority of people who are considering the notion a possibility don't really want to see it happen but are considering so for a number of reasons. Most importantly availability. Secondly even when he plays the last few seasons he has been red hot or ice cold. Then there is the subject of his defense which to say the least leaves a lot to be desired. Then there is the image of Ball inactive laughing it up on the sideline (while our team was getting the doors blown off) with previous busts who are now relegated to hanging on by a thread in the g league. I think we should be able to recognize with the team going out of their way to put a very strong emphasis on culture and leadership with the conclusion of this years draft that they expect LaMelo to lead the way this upcoming season and that begins with making significant strides and trending in a positive direction in the aforementioned aspects above. It just has to happen.
