Does Matt Ryan belong in top 10?

The season hasn’t even started yet, but the question about Matt Ryan’s status among NFL quarterbacks already is heating up.

In a television appearance, Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff was asked if Ryan is a top-10 quarterback. Dimitroff said there’s no question Ryan belongs in the top 10.

I just did the math and I agree with Dimitroff.

Off the top of my head, here’s my list of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league.

Drew Brees, New Orleans (hey, I cover the NFC South)

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay (he’s right there with Brees)

Tom Brady, New England

Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants (yep, I’m putting him ahead of his brother -- for now)

Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers (you can’t argue with Super Bowl rings)

Matthew Stafford, Lions

Peyton Manning, Broncos (we don’t know what he has or doesn’t have left)

Cam Newton, Panthers

Ryan

Philip Rivers

Yeah, I know I’m skipping guys like Matt Schaub, Tony Romo, Michael Vick and Joe Flacco. There’s a reason for that. I’d take Ryan over any of them any day. And, if Ryan can win a couple playoff games this year, I think he could crack the top five.

Tom Brady should be number 1. He's been to how many super bowls? And he has stats to go along with those appearances...throws a ton of TDs every season and makes average guys look great.

QFT, guy was supposed to be a sixth round scrub but with hard work and dedication it showed what you can achieve, plus he never had super loaded talent around him either and put up ungodly win numbers and stats and went to 5 super bowls and won three, how many 1 Overall picks can say that?? Not even Peyton... (but hopefully OUR number 1 can better that when all is said and done :-D )

Lol!! I love our Cam, but It's funny to me how he hesitated and had to do his math on Ryan, a QB who have been to 3 playoffs in 4 years, even though he flopped in each of those playoffs to see if hes a top 10 QB. But, he didn't hesitate to list Cam as the top 8 QB. I think it's a little early to list Cam as a top 10. Top15, sure.

6 through about 15 is a complete logjam of talent in which variations are pretty minute... i find it pretty hard to be offended by any specific ranking within that category of talent, so long as it's at least in the right category to begin with.

matt ryan, at his best, is definitely a top ten quarterback.

Number of Super Bowls don't mean anything when rating QBs for the coming/current season. Tom may well have been the hands down choice for number one a couple years ago but he has lost a step.

He is still very deserving of top 3 status but he isn't number one any more.

Top 10 when? If you are talking regular season then Ryan definitely qualifies. If you are talking in the playoffs then he is definitely not. Does he make the team around better? Only until the stakes are elevated. I think depending on what you value, you could make a case either way.

For that matter if results in wins and losses are the standard, then Newton wouldn't be in the top 10 either. But if you measures whether he makes the team around him better then you argue he is.

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
    • His daughter's initials are CAM.  Coincidence? I think not
