3-tech DT

It's not like he was juicing...

Theres all sorts of over the counter supplements that are banned from the NFL and I highly doubt most random young backup players know each and every one of them. Didn't the same thing happen to Peppers his rookie year?

yeah it was ephedra which you could buy otc at the time.

of course that still resulted in seven years of juicius peppers jokes from Saints** and falcons fans.

OP could've meant bringing in someone who is cut. He never said brining someone by a trade

I know buddy, but as I said(obviosuly not clearly enough, so my bad) I don't see anyone special becoming available. Theres not a plethora of good 3 techs in the NFL and unless theirs an aging vet with an inflated contract out there somewhere, I don't have much faith in finding one that gets cut. If it comes down to it, I would not be upset if we give up a late pick to obtain someone who can contribute.

If we are goin after one, it's not going to be for a stud.

Just one who is better than McClain though he had a good game last week. There should be several at the end of the day.

Same people calling Neblett a cheater are probably the same type of people that call certain players "thugs" and "convicts" while they steal pens from work and cheat on their wife. But they might have played Cam in a few quarters of Madden.

As for the DT situation, so long as McClain looks good enough to hold it down for the first 4 games and Neblett looks like he can still contribute, I'll hold out on getting antsy. The defensive unit as a whole has improved: Beason & Edwards are back (funny how some of those that were rolling their eyes at Ron Edwards solving our DT problem have properly stfu), Kuechly is starting (and TD is still going to contribute via depth), Norman is looking like a baller or at the very least an upgrade over Butler/Thomas/Stanford, Nakamura might have surplanted Martin, and all of those boys on the line get that extra year of experience.

If anything, I'm more concerned about losing players to injuries before the season begins again.

I'm not sure Mcclain would get cut if he was on another team. He has some talent(enough to warrant a third round pick). I understand and saw him get abused as much as anyone last year...but of all the DT'S in the leauge how many had success in their first year or even started??

Its not like he was surrounded by a lot help either. As you know we had 3 first year starters on the d-line last year, under a new head coach, in lockout shortened season, etc.

Point is, thinking we are going to have several options from other teams cuts that will be an upgrade over Mcclain is overly optimisitc imo. While I think we can find an upgrade over the likes of Nate Chandler, how much of an upgrade is debatable at this point and wont be known until the actual cuts happen.

Also while its certainly not ideal but maybe we could see Fua and Edwards line up next to each other at times. While neither are likely to get much pressure on qb's in time, i'm sure they could open up some holes on blitzes.

We have already used those 2 together in the pre-season in goal line situations, and feel they would be fine in short yardage situations as well.

It is just troublesome that should something happen to McClain, we would begin playing people out of their natural position. It would be much better if we had another traditional 3-tech penetrating type to at least get us through the first 4 games (assuming Neblett turns out to be okay).

I'm sure the front office already has a list prepared of names to watch out for during cuts.

This.

There are teams with too many 3-tech DTs. Lions and Giants, plust a few more I cannot remember from an article 2 weeks ago. But there are no guarantees that these players get cut. Practice Squads and keeping an extr D-lineman are some of the ways teams try to stash young talent.

It could happen. But teams are going to explore all avenues before cutting the dead weight.

Another thing to try and use as fodder. We use a traditional 3-tech very seldom. I would say other than a base package to start a game, or for obvious running downs, we seem to be in, use a variety of guys to play D-line mode. But yeah, someone to actually push, or Zod forbid pass, McClain would be a real nice additon.

Our 3 man line can be Hardy, Edwards, and CJ. We like Kearse on passing downs, and as has been mentioned Edwads and Fua were short yardage package. We also slide Hardy inside to bring in Applebottom and Alexander. CJ as well has been shoved inside. So we do have a diverse useage of our Line. poo, when does McClain even play?

Anyone else notice it is now McClain and Fua, instead of McFua? More of a shoutout to McClain, but Fua has had some plays as well this year. McClain has flashed so far, and Fua has just shown. Improvement from last year though.

This board is turning into a troll circus fast. It only takes about two comments into each thread before a newly christened huddle doucher successfully attempts to turn every topic into a pissing match.

It's getting to the point where you only read the OP then bow out before it gets ugly.

Sounds

a lot like

I Agree! This forum has become really dumb. Grown up men trying to pick chit chat fights all the time to see who's better or think they know better.

Blame the MODS for this $hit. Even sometimes they're the one making smart comments. I careless to speak my mind

I wish I could be offended by this

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
