we beat st louis in the 06 opener if i recall correctly, and then san diego in the 08 opener

nah the rams were 2007. 2006 was an ass-whupping at the hands of the falcons in charlotte when we had been hyped as serious super bowl contenders all offseason. john abraham took over that game.

2008 was super special because we won a road opener and then the home opener. that was only the second time since 2003 when we had won our first game at home.

poo you're right, i had them flipped.

that opener against the falcons was actually one of the more depressing games i've watched, probably because we were so hyped coming into the season. (i wonder if that's an insight into how hard we're taking this season so far...)

then the vikings debacle the next week...

i was so pumped for the 06 opener. there was all the offseason hype, it was the falcons, and i had somehow scored tickets at face the thursday before the game. they were otherwise very hard/expensive to come by and i kind of regard that whole episode as the point when the "wine and cheese" stuff and bitching about PSL owners started up for real on this site because the single game tickets were gone super fast.

the team came out so flat. vick was passing at will and dunn/norwood were ripping us up. steve smith was still having his hamstring problems so our offense was foster for 2-foster for 2-desperate bomb to keyshawn/keary colbert-punt. can't forget losing morgan and wharton for the year and hartwig getting injured as well. just a disaster and the truckloads of falcons fans there let us know about it.

As already stated, the problem is we are not loaded with talent.

Pre-2009:

I think we overspend in RBs, sure I love Ste and D-Will but 2 1st rounders and post-rookie contract of $10+ million a years on the Rb position is just not the way the NFL works today. Look at the Giants, spend on the offensive line and any guy with speed off the street can have a 100 yards game.

2009: Fox and Hurney gambles that good-Jake will still be around which would mean we are still a playoff team in win now mode. So they waste a 1st on Brown to improve now. So a combination of bad drafting AND bad gambling mean a pathetic draft.

2010: Already behind due to 2009 they make an even larger gamble to fix it by drafting Pickles and we all know they lost again. And on top of that we are the 2nd runner up loser in the Wildcat hype (At least we didn´t waste a 1st on Pat White or The Golden Calf of Bristol but only a 2nd on AE).

2011: Cam. I guess the 2nd best pick up was Bell and he wasn't even drafted...

3 years of drafting pretty much netting ONE talented player.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
