Who's defensive model should we follow,if we get a new regime?

When it comes down to it...3-4 puts more speed on the field. I love 4-3, but maybe it's starting to become old fashion..compared to the rest of the speed there is these days in the NFL.

Detroit dline has Suh, Avril, Bosch and Corey Williams. And that defense is absolutely terrible.

that's what we're supposed to be running but we aren't. what we've got is too soft and that ain't the jim johnson defense.

if they could shore up the Dline better and bring in some talent at safety i think we'd be good for it but the biggest thing would be just applying it. they've been playing it too safely.

mcdermott is the biggest problem and rivera just needs to take it over completely.

mcd is just too undisciplined and unfocused and too worried about making mistakes.

Well, it depends. I don't think you can be one or the other. You have to be able to run both. 4-3 is better against the run, 3-4 is better against the pass. Variations of both can give you 5 man fronts if need be, so they're versatile. It really comes down to implementation, game-planning through the week, and execution, no matter what you run. I think we just really need better secondary play and better tackling. We're really NOT bad against the run. Every team is going to break 1 or 2 15+ yard runs per game. That's just the nature of the game. You have to accept that. As long as we tackle, we're holding guys to 2-3 yards per carry. Anything over that is because we're just NOT tackling (90% of the time, anyway). If we had better, more consistent pass defense, we'd look a LOT better.

It seems the best defenses that are consistenly good are 3-4 based.

I love what the Texans are doing right now. The Ravens and Steelers are always good. Of course the 49ers are killing it wit their 3-4.

All this talk about building a dominant front 4 got me thinking. Its not working for the Giants like it used to. The Bills probably have the best 4-3 d-line on paper right now and are not doing anything special. The Lions also have a good one on paper.

Then you have teams likes the eagles and Falcons who have a killer secondary but their defenses are not really scaring anyone.

Biggest problem I forsee is do we have the pieces to make a dominant 3-4?

Can we move CJ AND Alexander to 3-4 backers? Then consolidate the middle with Beason and Kuechly.

Of course we need to find a new 3 man front as well too.

The Texans run a 5-2 defense.

I think the solution is to keep the current Jim Johnson scheme that we want to be running, shore up the positions of dire need on that side of the ball, and execute it properly.

Both work but you need the DC to execute it. Right now we don't have that in any way shape or form.

Beason and Keek not sure if they can handle inside duties in a 3-4, MLB are usually pretty big. CJ would probably do very well at the de spot, his sack totals would go down. Main problem is, we don't have a stand up pass rusher. Sorry but Hardy, CJ or Alexander aren't versatile enough to play OLB.

Not to mention the 4-6 D he learned in his playing days. If it's really McD(i do think so) who is holding back the D, then Rivera needs to step in and take the reigns. His friendship is going to cost him his job.

i don't know that he's "friends" with mcD. i don't know if they ever worked together.

i've heard that mcD was really rivera's second choice and that he really wanted wilks for the job but he chargers wouldn't let him out of their contract. it could be that even though rivera and mcD come from the same JJ 4-3 background, that the two of them just aren't on the same page. wilks has worked with rivera a lot over the years.

all speculation and rumor but hey...if it results in getting on the field what was promised us when rivera got the job and the results that rivera's gotten at chicago and in san diego then i'm all for it.
