Staying home from school because you're sick

Our daughter is home from school because she has a 101 fever, sore throat/ cold symptoms.

When I was growing up it always seemed like I was being punished for being sick because my mom would make me stay in bed all day deeming that if I was too sick to go to school then I needed to be in bed.

I make her rest but I don't force her to stay in bed. I let her watch tv but if she seems well enough to do some work I have her practice her school work for a little while. I think it's most important to get plenty of rest so they can recover.

What do you do when your kids are sick or you're sick and at home from school?

I make them clean house... :)

Nah, if mine are sick, I just tell them to chill, watch TV, play Xbox whatever... doesn't really matter. If you're sick, you're sick...

Forcing them to lay in the bed all day is not gonna help anything.... plus mine are both old enough now to stay home alone so they do whatever they want anyway.

I was like your mom when my daughter was young. Staying home sick was not something we wanted her to ever choose lightly so we gave her lots of love and care but it was a day of convalescing. It was not a "fun" day.

If she watched TV it was watching her Grandmas shows (Soap operas and talk shows) and there was no going outside or anything that would be "fun" beyond reading.

Further, staying out of school meant foregoing any plans she may have had after school hours. It was a blown day.

I used to play hooky all the time... I'd do whatever I wanted, like it was an extra weekend day or something... I'd even fake sick on days I was bussed to another school for AG classes, because my aunt lived close by and would come get me with no problem. I generally got away with skipping school and AG, sick or not, because I was usually ahead of the curve on classwork and knowledge of the curriculum.

My son's only 2, but when he's older and if he's sick I'll let him do what he wants and feels up to, so long as he isn't overexerting himself.

School work is overrated. So is mandatory "education." So is forced quarantine.

Lot of folks gettin' high and mighty on how kids should spend a sick day.

I wonder if the same folks are as strict when they call in sick from work. I'm sure everyone stayed in bed all day convalescing, except when they decided to be a real trooper and work for a couple of hours remotely. I'm also sure no one has taken a sick day for a hangover.

I'm not saying that you should use a sick day fraudulently, I'm very honest about if I am sick or not. I've not taken a sick day yet at my current job. But when I take a sick day, I'm gonna live it up in the confines of my apartment. I'm gonna watch OnDemand, play some games, order in delivery, and occasionally ride the Nyquil train to the snot bubble gates of Snoozytown.

And all I'm saying is, if I'm entitled to that as an adult, then I wouldn't be so zealous as to tell a kid he should spend his or her whole sick day in bed or watching Judge Alex. Come on, the kid is (allegedly) sick! That's just cruel to punish him or her like that.

If you have a 101 fever, you will be doing 101 fever activities like laying in bed and laying in bed some more.

I better not catch you eating a popsicle or dancing around to Justin Bieber music videos.

You better be asking for soup and if you ask for Pizza you'll be back in school within 10 minutes.

The poor kid feels horrible. She's still running a mild fever, she looks pale and has that sick look going on. She is laid up on the couch with the cat & dog, a few stuffed animals and her favorite blanket. I'm letting her watch cartoons and right now Jimmy Neutron is on. I love Jimmy Neutron! Every time I ask her a question she whines & groans her answer. She actually just asked for something to eat.

At least I know what I'm going to feel like in a few days. I might as well go ahead and make some soup and go to the store to buy up some sick products.

    • Not sure who said it first, but Tepper is the correct answer. Still, I'm gonna go with Kasay keeping it inbounds. If, you subscribe to the butterfly effect version of time travel consequences.... When we win SBXXXVIII everybody's lives change: Moose never breaks his leg, We win it all again in 05. Tommy Jone is unknown and Peppers stays home, Champs once more 2008. No artificial pig heart turning JR into a creepy weirdo, no lockout, no Clausen. Fox and Jake ride off into the sunset on their own terms. No 2-14, no #1 pick. But, no laptop, no Blinn, 3 years behind The Golden Calf of Bristol, we still get Cam. JR let's him grow his locs like he always wanted, Smitty sees Cam in a new light. Dreads swinging, (and Smitty with his 3 Lombardis behind him) Cam is old enough to get those calls. No Manning narrative, Cotchery TD, PI against Talib on Philly Brown, 10,000 RTP calls and Kony Ealy SB50 MVP. No Jeans Fridays, no Tepper. KB doesn't slip on his own meatsweat mid-route in SD, Cam becomes the 1st QB to win 10 straight SBs. Retiring after being elected 47th president of the US of A, Cam ushers in the Permanent Proletarian Revolution across the globe, Xi Jinping bows in awe. "ẄøŘƙƐṛ§ őF ŧĤə ŵØRłð, ŮŊÏŦƐ!!!"
    • Yeah your right the owner was copping hand shandies while all this was going down
    • I mean not surprised the Patriots took him in and aren't trying to push him out. They've been the most morally bankrupt team in the NFL for a long while. Wouldn't be surprised if Vrabel has his own dirt on Kraft/Brady and other assholes from that organization over the last couple decades.
