A look at the 6 GM candidates the panthers will interview this week

I think the Panthers new GM will be one of the 6 mentioned in the Observer article. If I had to guess I'd say it'll be Gettleman because Accorsi's been trying to get him a GM job for a while now.

I know Ross is interviewing today.

Wondering if the previous ties Ross has to Rivera and Sean McDermott will factor in. Having ties to a coach who's expected to be on the hot seat could be a double-edged sword.

To follow up on Gamble, looks like he tanked his Jets interview:

After three interviews with the Jaguars, Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell has yet to be hired as the General Manager in Jacksonville. Instead, he’ll interview a second time for the G.M. job with the Jets.

So what’s going on? Glad you asked. (Even if you didn’t.)

As we hear it, both teams want Caldwell. But one league source says that Caldwell and the Jaguars had a financial gap that couldn’t be bridged, which has prompted Caldwell to explore more seriously the opportunity in New York.

And the opportunity in New York has arisen for Caldwell in part because, as we hear it, Tom Gamble’s interview with the Jets didn’t go well.

For Caldwell, there’s a chance he overplays his hand and ends up staying at Oregon. I mean, Atlanta.

The Observer website isn't available outside of Charlotte?

I read my local paper and watch local and national news. I only have so much free time.

do you subscribe to the Wilmington Star online?

If the Panthers played in Wilmington I would think everyone here would certainly do so..

Gotta think that the first interview wont be the last here in Charlotte. I know the consensus here is that everyone wants Ross, the problem being he is the first interview we have. Unless he really shines in the office with JR i don't see us hiring him today and we have too many interviews for him to wait for a call back. Hope I'm wrong though.

Personally, from what little I know about each guy I really like Gettleman the best. Everywhere he has been he has been a part of a successful franchise. That being said, Ross seems to be a very hot commodity around the league, and his youth is obviously a plus. I would be satisfied with either.

This will sound "ageist," but I wish Gettleman was 10-15 years younger lol. I don't know why, but it would make me feel better. I suppose it's in the same vein of question that people have of Ross. Some bring up that Ross has gone on so many interviews but hasn't gotten an offer. Well, Gettleman seems to be a very well respected guy, yet he's been stuck in the same position for 13 (I think) years. Why?

To be clear, I'd be happy with either as our new GM, just throwing out a devil's advocate PoV.

Ross is young, but not inexperienced.

Of the candidates we have, he's tied for the second most NFL scouting experience (16 years, same as Paton, behind only Gettleman who's been at it for 25 years).

My ideal situation would be to hire Gettleman for the job now but also hire his eventual successor at the same time, putting him in a position like Director of Player Personnel or some such (something we don't have right now).

Have said before that I'd absolutely love to get both Gettleman as the GM of the present and Ross as his heir apparent, but that's a pipe dream.

Which is why if the pipe dream scenario is exactly that, a pipe dream, if we have to go one or the other, I would prefer Ross. I want someone that preferably could hold the job down for the next decade and beyond. While I'm sure Gettleman could do that, just how long does he plan on working in an NFL front office? He's already in his 60s, is he really going to want the NFL GM grind in 5 years? 10 years? Just makes me a little bit uncomfortable.

However, if he's determined to be the best man for the job, then you hire him.

    • The only thing I know is nfl red zone.
    • We put a ton of high draft capital into young WRs over the past few years. We drafted a WR in top 2 rounds of the draft in 4 out of the past 5 years. At some point, we need to rely on the dudes we drafted vs relying on veteran role players. That's the only way we're going to evolve as a team and take the next step to going back to winning again.  Remember when Cam lost KB and everyone thought it was the end of the universe? And 2015 happened.  Maybe losing Theilen and Coker will open some opportunities for some other guys to step up.
    • So apparently in the time between the end of the last football season, and now, a TON of streaming sites have been taken down. From what I remember most of these idiotic offiicial streaming services that offer NFL games don't ever offer ALL of the games. I remember subscribing to one service on youtube last season that cost hundreds of dollars and it would still constantly tell me games were either blacked out or unavailable, which is totally ridiculous. Is there any one service that I can watch ALL of the games on?? It gets on my everlasting nerves already that there's so many different streaming sites and they are all expensive as hell. I don't want to take out an entire additional car payment to subscribe to 4 different streaming services to watch all the games. Is there just ONE I can subscribe to? The most comprehensive thing I have access to now is Sirius XM. It's only 10 ish bucks a month and I can listen to the home or away broadcasts of any game. Only thing is I can't WATCH the games but this seriously comes in handy if I'm out doing something, driving, or can't stay still at the moment to watch the games. But usually I'm off on Sundays, so I mostly want to watch them.
