Questions leading up to the draft

1. My biggest question is how much input will Rivera have in this draft being it is produce or perish this year? Or is he a lame duck?

2 Who will be the most likely cap causalities? I see Gross, Gamble, R Edwards, and Anderson as potential causalities.....I do not see us keeping both Gross and Gamble ..my bet is we retain Gross.If we lose Gross we will need to replace him with a 1st round pick

3.Which one of our FAs do we try to retain? I hope like hell it is D Edwards or we will need at least to spend a 1st or 2nd at UT.

4. Can we afford or risk not taking a wr in the 1st or 2nd round? If Smitty goes down our season will be over for sure

5.What impact player in the draft will give Rivera the most production? Does Gettleman care or is he building toward the following year? This off- season should demonstrate if they are connected at the hip or is this the second coming of the J Fox 2010 lame duck season award ?

6.Is anyone curious as why Gettlemen has not brought in a staff to speak of?

7.Can anyone see a scenario where we can avoid multiple cuts to stay under the cap? If yes please show your math

8.We need at least a OG, back up qb and safety to even show up next year...how can we make the cuts for the cap and fill these positions?

9.If we let R Edwards go can we stop the run and get some push without drafting a NT?

10. Will this draft be about putting the final pieces in place or replacing cap causalities?

If someone can answer these questions I will then be ready to give my mock draft

we have to "value shop" at this draft. get the highest ranked (on our board) at either WR, DL, OL, or DB.

IMO we don't need any one position more than another.........

we just need the best that's on the board at any of these positions.

ps.....what I'd really like to see happen is for us to be offered the chance to trade back to the low twenties and pick up a few picks.

Two things I hope Gettleman does

First, don't fall in love with popular players, treat this as a business and we will be good.

Second, do what you said, draft big guys first and then guys who score TD's

We will do no good going out and drafting all the flashy WR's that you guys slobber over each year if our QB is staring at the sky on each play. You HAVE to get your lines secure or nothing else works.

If the QB gets plenty of time, then many WR's will have good years, TE's also. And, any RB will get yds.

yeah i agree, but who is a number 1 left tackle that will fall to panthers at 14......lane johnson, ricky wagner, barret jones.........

i mean i like jones alot but he has only play left tackle for one year....he did very well but idk if he is a sure started like matt kalil.

If you improve the OL I do not think we have to take a WR. Improved OL = improved Cam....makes current WR group better...

This draft needs to address trenches and our secondary...

I think we have the "TD scorers" in place already

We need to work on the trenches. Boh the offensive line and the defensive lines. If we're going to beat the teams in the South, we're going to have to be able to generate a consistent pass rush, while also holding off the the opposing defensive lines, especially if McCoy and the other young defensive tackles become Pro Bowl level players.

A WR is definitely needed, but it could be possible to find one of those in Free Agency. No, not Dwayne Bowe. No, not Wes Welker, but I'm sure there are quality WRs out there that could be had for a discount price.

My prediction for the FA and the Draft is ..

We cut DWill (I haz a sad), Gamble, Gross, Captain, and either CJ or RKaliel, and Beas restructured / traded.

We draft 1-OT, 2-DT, 4-CB, 5-RB, 6-S.

Optionally, "Oppa Gettman Style" could be load up the trenches (OL and DL picks across the board) and let the next HC work out the secondary / receiver issues next draft.

We would then have to FA a WR and a S to give Nakamura some competition.

So we end up somewhat better than before, but much better cap position come 2014. Which will be the start of the Gettleman Era..

He'll have plenty of input. Gettleman is not going to pick someone without Rivera's approval, they're a team.

No way to know, only pure speculation.

We'll probably try to retain all of them, probably with cheap 1 year deals that they'll take if they can't find any other interest.

Yes we can. Our passing attack is prolific enough as it is, it's more important to shore up the lines.

I think we'll see the most improvement for the team by taking the BPA at OL or DT.

He told the staff when he got hired that he didn't plan to come in and replace the staff. He wants to give everyone a chance and see what we've got first.

      I mean, you're acting like we don't see the tippy-toe bunny hops, jump throws more than normal (with both feet dangling in the air every which a way), and off-platform but off-balance throws that arrive short or sail high. Could that be bad mechanics due to being short? Could a seeming propensity to bail the pocket towards the sidelines early as opposed to sitting in the pocket tall and strong, surveying his reads, be an attempt at trying to see an open throwing lane? I'm not saying that what you're saying isn't a contributing factor to what has been an underwhelming display of executing the QB position, but this is year three, and if the lightbulb hasn't switched on by now---if you haven't figured out that guys are faster, stronger and generally more athletic, then what's it going to take? It's hard to forget that "mental processing" was supposed to be Bryce Young's superpower. Are you telling me that he can't nail down such an easy concept as, "I can't get away with the things I did in college at the pro level," is that right? If he can't get past that, then that surely limits his ability to successfully execute all the other stuff.  Look, I'm not trying to be flippant. I acknowledge that playing pro football is more complex than a lot of fans realize, but all we can do, as fans, is observe. One of my favorite things to do is just look at the greater picture and think what part human nature is playing in the many decisions that are being made or have to be made. You're absolutely correct that fans don't know exactly what's going on, but that is by design, and in many ways it's just the nature of the beast. Some things we can't know. That being said, the professionals screw the hell up all the time. The professionals disagree all the time. These disagreements can be within the same franchise or from franchise to franchise. And sometimes these decisions are all over the place, so excuse me if I ain't exactly buying the I-know-more-than-thee sentiment and that that means that professionals always make better decisions than fans would about certain players. Some of this stuff is simply luck or a crapshoot.
