Gettleman says he'll use FA to put Panthers in position to take best player available in draft

Don't draft for need, draft the BPA no matter what. The correct way of conducting a draft, take the BPA even if it's a team strength.

"With the Giants, people thought we were crazy for drafting defensive ends. We drafted (Mathias) Kiwanuka and we drafted JPP (Jason Pierre-Paul), and everyone's saying, ‘My God, when's it going to stop?' But if that's the best player available, you take him. Nothing like competition."

We'll use Free Agency to put the team in position to take the best player available in the draft.

See, this is one of those sort of statements that by rights ought to be greeted with "Well duh, of course that's what he's gonna do. That's what you're supposed to do."

Over the past ten years though, that was definitely not something that Panther fans could assume would happen :(

Direct quote...

"The way I look at the whole picture is, free agency is the opportunity to set your draft up," he said. "You want to be in a position where you can take the best player. Nine times out of 10 you get in trouble when you draft for need. It's a problem. You can have a top 10 pick and make up your mind you're going to draft for need, and if he's not there, then what do you do?

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
