Former Carolina Panthers DL Eric Norwood Joins the SaberCats

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they were assigned former Carolina Panthers defensive lineman Eric Norwood on a one-year contract.

"Adding a player with the high-level experience of Eric is something we are very excited about," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He gets downhill as a pass rusher and we look forward to seeing what he will bring to our defense in 2013."

Norwood (6-1, 240, South Carolina) is a rookie to the Arena Football League. Last season, Norwood played for the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. He is a two-year National Football League veteran who spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Carolina Panthers. In 2011, he appeared in 13 games, making seven tackles on defense and six tackles on special teams. In 2010, Norwood was drafted in the fourth round (124th overall) and played in 15 games for the Panthers, recording six tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

The Oakland, Calif. native played college football for the University of South Carolina from 2006 to 2009. Over his collegiate career as both a linebacker and defensive end, Norwood appeared in 51 games for the Gamecocks, recording 255 tackles and 29 sacks. As a senior, he was named as a First-Team All-American by the Associated Press for the first time and First-Team All-Southeastern Conference for the third consecutive year.

This guy was a monster in the SEC and yet he did nothing in the NFL he has all the tools, I just dont get it

      Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.

      Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.

      Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
