Vet minimum salary cap benefit rule(saved us 1.56 million so far)

Ever wonder how a player can have a cap hit less than their base salary?

For example Derek Anderson has a base salary of $840k but his cap hit is only $555k.

Well this is achieved through a rule I just found today thanks to this article. http://bostonherald....and_the_minimum

The short of it is this. Any vet who signs a 1 year vet minimum deal can have their base salary only count as $555k. 3 rules to this.

1.Has to be at least a 4 year vet.

2.Signing bonus/any workout bonuses can't exceed more than $65k.

3.Has to sign a 1 year vet minimum deal.

The vet minimum varies by the tenure of a player. Here's a link for that.

So far we have used this rule on 6 players(Anderson,Florence,Hartstock,Senn,Cole and Moore) according to http://www.spotrac.c...nthers/cap-hit/ and saved 1.56 millionn in cap hits. Number could grow to 7 and 1.72 million in savings once Mike Mitchells deal is announced.

We could have used it and save another 160k on the contract of D.J Moore. (Maybe we did and Spotrac just didn't pick up on it?)***EDIT spotrac is wrong rest of thread adjusted.

BTW I finally found Dwan Edwards deal. 2 yrs/ 3.6 million.(1.4 million signing bonus). 1.6 million cap hit this year and 2 million next year. http://overthecap.co...thers&Year=2013 You'll have to click on his name for full details.

I hardly consider a paying a DT with the second most sacks in the NFC last year 1.8 million dollars a year as caving.

compromise. i'm sure it was a good bit less than what dwan felt he deserved after last year and it wasn't above market value so i'm not going to complain.

So Dwan dictated to Gettleman what he wanted and Gettleman caved.

You act as if we gave Dwan a shitload of cash, he's a decent pass-rusher and we need him, otherwise we would have TWO needs on the line.

If he continues to improve in this defense, we will be glad we agreed to a 2 year contract. He really played well all things considered last year. I think getting him back was crucial to stabilizing the line. We need to build on his performance last year and find a NT that can plug the middle. Then we would have a very good line and front seven.

agreed. if cole works out then we got a run stuffer for essentially less than the vet min.

i like this cap benefit.

I am on the Cole train…He was pretty good pre injury. It has been a year and a half since. Maybe he is healthy and can contribute? Another point to consider. Signing Cole was the first thing Gettlemen did. Gives me the idea Gettlemen wanted him badly.

I can’t wait for practices to start, because I anxious to hear how he is doing.

Regarding Adopt-a-Panter, and I repeat for the third time...can I please adopt Dwan now, of my own free-will rather than having to be first in line for him as I got "stuck" with him last year when all of the well-known guys were already gone?

He was mine by default last year and I want him again.

He is a steal at 1.8...he will not let any of us down.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
