Richardson, who co-chaired the search that led to the hiring of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, called in a major favor from the commissioner last year. President Obama’s acceptance speech at the stadium was scheduled for the first Thursday in September, the same night the first nationally televised NFL game of the regular season would air on NBC. Pro football routinely attracts the largest TV audiences. Translation: Fewer people would see the city’s big moment on the national political stage if the broadcast went head-to-head with a prime-time football game.

Instead, the NFL moved the game back a day. Richardson explained the genesis of that move to council members in a brief monologue that, no doubt, had the intended effect.

“I think it is worthwhile for you and I to reflect just a little bit on an example of us trying to go to bat for the city,” Richardson told council members that night. “You know I went to bat for you in the DNC, I think, as strongly as possible. And I think you will agree, too.”

The Big Cat has some serious pull in this league for a recent expansion owner.

JR should be worshipped by the city of Charlotte. He gave them a market in the country's biggest sports league without taking a dime.

And on top of that, the PSLs themselves, were Jerry's greatest gift to the city. Selling permanent seat licenses, for an expansion team, to a bunch of out of town bankers? It has been a gold mine for the city.

I'm not talking about any Panther fans that own PSLs, I am strictly referring to the ones who bought them as an investment. The ones who, every year, have their tickets posted on stub hub the day they go on sale to the public.

Every time we play a big market team, and our stands are filled with opposing jerseys, that's millions of dollars lining the city of Charlotte.

Flights, hotels, car rentals, dining out, cab fare, bar tabs, you name it. All thanks to Jerry's innovation (and culture of mediocrity, but ya know.)

Yes it is. Considering Panthers lawyers were speaking with lawyers of a potential buyer, we can only hope that buyer is local. Would LOVE to know who they are speaking with. But some of JRs comments foreshadow a different story. To paraphrase what JR said at the close of the hearings last week "The best tether you have is me, so say a prayer tonight for my health". Against legal council he wanted to seek a tether. I think he did so because he knows the parties interested in buying the team want to move the team. Panthers PR put out a statement the other day saying the team had no plans to move "under current ownership." That is a concerning statement. And then the fact that JR wants the city to be able to buy the stadium for $1 if the team moves, that speaks of a man who is uncertain that his team will remain here after he sells or passes away.

There are a lot of interesting things in that article. JR is seriously concerned that the longterm stability of the Panthers in Charlotte is in jeopardy.

I really think (as I've posted before) with JR's age, I truly believe he has a firm succession plan in place that somehow legally binds this team to the Carolinas. Sure the NFL is business But Charlotte and the Carolinas is still a boom area( when you look at the nations economic troubles,) and is projected to keep growing. LA's NFL bid is a basket case with the best financier, Phil Anschutz ( who by the way is in his 70s) backing out . San Antonio doesn't have enough fortune 500 companies to support luxury suite purchases which is key to a teams viability. BTW the last estimate for the LA stadium was coming in at around 2.3 billion dollars.

I agree, I'm just saying when you read Spanberg's article it paints a picture that a potential move is more realistic than you and I might think.

No doubt...I'm sure as Panther fans we would be crapping our pants if we really knew what went down during some of these private conversations. Don't laugh, but I also think that a couple of deep playoff/ SB runs would really solidify this team to Charlotte.

      Yup. I'm exactly as dedicated to this team as they are to putting a quality product on the field. Life is too short to spend getting upset about garbage.  I'm a fan. I'll (probably) always be a fan. But because I am not submitting myself to weekly torture doesn't mean my fandom is less pure than anyone else's.

      It a message board so I can see the difference in what we are talking about. The circumstances where he thrives being only times when the game is out of reach and garbage time. That is the lie. It was 45cat who defined his play in garbage time as "turning on his baller switch".  I don't think I've even given the illusion that Bryce "can" be a franchise QB if he only "flips on his baller switch" during garbage time.  I don't think anyone has ever said that.  The whole point of what he is saying is that you can't give Bryce credit for garbage time.  I agree. I just happen to think it's hyperbole to say that is the only time he's played well.  There are more than 2 choices of "He sucks, cut him.  Worst QB ever" and "Franchise QB".  I've consistently said over and over that despite his bad play, he has only shown a ton of improvement overall in the last 10 games from last year.  The difference from game 1 last year to game 18 was something very few fans even thought possible. People saying he was too small and would never hold up in the NFL.  Dude can take a shot.  People saying he doesn't have the ability to throw down the field.  That great pass in game 1 from this year that Nola should have caught in the endzone was 43 yards in the air.  He can make all the throws. They said he can't throw when pressured.  Was one of the top QB's under pressure over the 2nd half of last season.   They said he doesn't throw deep.  Had one of the highest deep pass attempts in the league over the 2nd half of the season. They said, Oh, well, he can but he's not good at it.  Of those deep passes he was one of the most accurate despite a high drop rate by his receivers. People keep saying it's been 3 years.  That's enough time to see he sucks.  In reality it's been 2 years and 2 games.  There is no way I'll ever believe his rookie year didn't set him back.  No matter what was said it was a horrible situation on every level.  We are trying to come out of and build from that Frank Reich year which I hope was the bottom of the barrel.  I've never seen a worse situation for a rookie QB, maybe for any QB.  I don't think it's that much of a stretch after how bad that year was for any players development to set it aside and say that year doesn't paint an accurate picture.     I'm not even arguing for Bryce in so much as I'm arguing to have more patience and quit with the hyperbole and over the top statement or outright lies.  It's only because a handful of the same people have hated Bryce since he was drafted and have rarely given him credit for what he has done and can do. It's the lack of an accurate representation of Bryce and our situation and the development of players. 2021 - It was Derrick Brown's 2nd year, week 11.  He was benched.  Calls to trade him.  He sucks.  The Panthers are cursed.  Fast forward a few years and he has developed into one of the best players on the team and a Captain.   I don't know if Bryce will spiral and completely bust or if it's just a rocky road to stardom like so many players before him.  We have very little to lose and everything to gain by staying the course right now.

      Sure let’s do better. I want a bad ass defensive guy. Vrabel would have made me happy.  Finesse teams do offense. And we are damned sure trying to do finesse. Can’t even do that right, we have nothing going.
