Hypothetical: If We Don't Draft Tavon Austin or C. Patterson...

And Austin ends up exceeding projections and becomes the next Steve Smith and Patterson becomes the next Hakeem Nicks/Dez Bryant or player of similar size/ability, but we draft a GOOD to GREAT DT like Star, how would you feel about it? If Star of Richardson is the pick and they are a solid starter for the next 10-15 years, possibly even perennial Pro Bowlers comparing the impact each would have on their respective units, how would you feel?

Would you be satisfied with the pick? In 5 years? In 10 years?

If we got Star I would be fine with that. I know if we don't find the replacement for Smitty this year that there will be twice as many guys in free agency next year including many receivers. Finding your run stuffing DT for the next decade can't be a bad thing. Plus it gives all our receivers enough touches to truly determine their potential here.

If we are smart, and I suspect we are, we are still going to get a great athlete. Star has seen a poo ton of support to us at 14. Why is it so difficult to believe he could actually make an immediate impact? The kid can play. Chances are he is going to contribute. Besides him, there are plenty of guys worthy of our pick. Which just makes it that much more interesting.

I have two reasons for wanting Star before we go skill positions. He is built for this. Great lower body with great base and power. Strong upper body with great strength and heavy hands. He is a monster. And he makes us a whole lot better. And we have a Defensive coach. I bet Rivera has plans for him already. Running schemes through his mind. Dreaming up the next big thing. .....................Star and Dwan. With Cole and Kearse for rotation. I'll take it.

This was what I was thinking when creating the thread... That's the thing... We're kind of weighing a future replacement for Smitty versus a sold-great DT for 10+ years.

I would love to get a guy that acts as Smitty's successor and we don't miss a beat when he retires, but I'm not going to lie... I wouldn't be mad and may even have wet dreams when envisioning Keek running free behind a guy like Star for years to come. Tough call.

Thing is that as long as Star is healthy there is little doubt of his ability. But who is a can't miss receiver in this draft. So we want a guy who would be top 2 DT in most drafts or a receiver that last year for example might be the 4th or 5th best receiver in the draft.

    • Serious question:  Why LG and not RG?  There may be something I do not know, but Hunt's contract is huge and he could be let go after this season (post june 1 cut) and it would save the Panthers a ton of money.  Extending him would be paying a G who is in his mid 30s guaranteed money (and I do not see that as a terrible thing).  So if we release him at age 31, we save $19m.  I like him, but at 31, will he be worth the mega contract?   LG Damien Lewis has actually outperformed Hunt and he is a year younger.  He would also save less vs. the cap and leave less in the dead cap pool.  While his current contract expires after the 2027 season, he is a better prospect (IMO) to extend because only 50% of his current contract was guaranteed.  Here are his contract numbers.   Now, getting to Ickey--he could want LT money if he is offered a second contract.  If we pay him LT money to play either G positions, we are likely overpaying.  Secondly, the injury he suffered could be one that limits his productivity.  Ickey was improving, but he was an average LT.  The only way I re-sign Ickey is to have him accept a G contract and make a lot of it incentive based.     I feel like I am missing something, but in my mind, Ickey was always a guard if you consider the fact that he is an average OT and would be a great G.  Is that still the case (injury)?
    • Supplemental draft uses picks from next year. So a team were to draft him in the 1st, their upcoming 1st next draft would no longer be available. There have been some notable players that were obtained in the supplemental draft, such as Kosar. It doesn't necessarily happen every year either, and is more on a as needed basis. The gambling trouble is a big red flag for teams, and maybe pushes him down to a 4th? Not sure a team would use a 1st on him.
    • If hypothetically, Ickey comes fully healthy, would he be willing to give up left tackle money for left guard money? In the Panthers case, moving Ickey LG or RT would be in our best interest and as it gives us our best starting offensive lineman combination. However, Im sure there's another team that would be desperate and willing to dish out top dollars for Ickey to have him come play left tackle for them. In that case, Ickey would just leave for that team instead.
