Thomas Keiser cut

2013 Carolina Panthers cuts: Thomas Keiser and Damario Jeffrey waived

The Panthers are starting to cut down in preparation for Spartanburg.

The Carolina Panthers begun trimming their roster Monday morning after seeing their rookies in Charlotte this weekend. Already there have been two defensive releases, as both Thomas Keiser and Damario Jeffrey made it known they were leaving via twitter.

Keiser is shocking because of his production in 2011, and flashes in 2012.

Not every move the team makes will be gold, and this one reeks of shortsightedness. It's easy to forget he was more productive that Greg Hardy in 2011, and a valuable rotational pass rusher. It's a hard sell that Keiser is any worse than the UDFA's they brought in, or fringe guys like Mario Addison. Someone will sign Keider, and they're getting a great player.

Damario Jeffrey was a little easier to swallow, only because he didn't really have a role in the defense.

I think Gettleman is looking to get bigger and stronger on the Dline....maybe looking for a different type of DE.

We have CJ, Hardy, and Alexander as the core rotation.

I thought Keiser was a solid role guy as well....interesting to see where we go from here.

But, there is one thing for sure.....Gettleman knows DLine.  So, I trust him.

Weird. It was either Gettleman or Rivera who tipped this off earlier. They were mentioning our d-line rotation and mentioned Mario Addison but left Keiser out. Not sure if it was a press conference or interview on wfnz but I think it was Gettleman who was talking about the rotation and mentioned everyone but Keiser including Addison and even Fua.

this.

we should expect to see more favorites cut in the near future...guys we think have a lot of potential or who have done some good things in the past.

it could be be he just doesn't fit the mold of the big DE they want on the line. it could be that he wasn't recovering from his injury as they hoped. it could be they really liked one of the guys they saw this past weekend.

it could be any number of reasons, but gettleman knows what he likes for the team and apparently he didn't like what he was seeing in keiser. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
