Am I the only Panther fan that would sign Hakeem Nicks over Hardy?

Recommended Posts

On hindsight, Hurndog used the franchise tag completely wrong that offseason. Should have tagged DLo and just ponied up the ridiculous contract Kalil got anyway (and for the record, I'm not against Kalil being re-signed at all). Tagging DLo would have been smart. Needed to ensure a quality backfield to help what we all knew would be Cam with the first pick. Granted, he ended up not needing it, but the best way to help a young QB (not named pickles) succeed is a great ground game. Double Trouble was mandatory, but with age and recent performance factored in, DLo should have been a 1 yr tag and release with Stew the long term goal all along. That's just being proactive I suppose, and Hurney was at his best being reactive. I use the term "best" lightly. Locking up Stew was the right choice. DLo was questionable from the get go.

As for the Hardy situation, well I'll take two dominant DE's over a big contract injury concern WR any day.

Only time will tell, and it's easy to look in hindsight and say what we should have done. Revisionist history is too easy to expose flaws in real time dilemmas and decisions.

To answer your question, you're probably not the only fan who thinks that. I just question signing a what will be 26 yr old aging WR to a big contract over signing a what will be 25 yr old lunatic of a DE just now coming into his own to a big contract. DE's typically last longer than WR's, and are more of a premium position.

Finding a top notch WR is our next big priority, yes, but not at the expense of what Hardy can bring to the table. I guess we'll see If Greg was a flash in the pan last year or if he gets 50 sacks. At the same time, let's see how Nicks does in his contract year.

Sorry for my bad grammar and typos, I'm intoxicated.

Much love from San Diego. Go Panthers!!!

Only way I'd rather have Nicks over Hardy is if the Kraken under preformed and still wanted Charles Johnson money or we really sh*t the bed and land a top 3 pick and take Clowney.

My dream scenario is Gettleman gets a time machine and goes back to 2008 and kicks Hurney square in the nutsack for putting us in the cap mess we're in.

It's not as simple as "would you rather have Hardy or Nicks". You're talking about allowing Hardy to hit Free Agency just for the CHANCE to sign Nicks. We'd still have to outbid a ton of other teams, and that's only IF the Giants choose not to franchise tag him. That's an awfully big risk to take.

But regardless, I would still take Hardy even if it was that simple. Not only is he a rising young star...we need that attitude on our team too. Especially with talks about complacency in the locker room and stuff like that. Did you see how we played against Atlanta in Game 2 last year? I have no doubt Hardy played a huge role in riling the team up for that one considering how he spoke out before the game about what went down at the end of Game 1.

That depends.  I'd love to have Nicks, but I'd also really like to keep Hardy.

Let's say that this coming season Frank Alexander really shows a lot when rotating in while Smitty loses a step and Nicks has another very good year for the NYG.  Does that change things?  It would for me.  In that scenario, I'd take Nicks > Hardy.

If this was Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, heck maybe even demaryious thomas then i'd really consider it.  It seems the Giants can plug any receiver in and get production out of them for 1.  2 he is injured an awful lot.

And let me just go on the record and state this has nothing to do with Hardy. No doubt he is one of the top 4-3 ends in the league

So if Hardy is one of the top 4-3 ends in the league and Hakeem Nicks is maybe top 15 ,why would you pick Nicks over Hardy? Depending on how you feel about Mike Wallace, Marques Colston and even Victor Cruz, he might not even be top 15.

Also using RB position as a comparison isn't fair imo especially when you actually can use both DE's on majority if not all of your defensive snaps.  Like earlier poster said, if you were talking about let's say Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, those type of players then yes, I'm all for it.   For Hakeem Nicks?  Pffft.. hell to the no.

U can never have too many pass rushers.

Never heard a saying about that with running backs. So it's totally different. We should lick up hardy. I remember before the season posting about how the dude would break out soon. He's just too athletic.

But I think we will sign nicks too tho if at all possible

Everyone on here and other Panther sites alike all want to us to pay big money and lock up Hardy for the long term. This whole situation is Jonathan Stewart 2.0. Back before we signed Stewart, everyone was itching for the news that we locked him up, when we did lock him up, all the Panther fans jumped up for joy and all problems solved and Hurney was looked upon like a god.

Fast forward to now and its a well known joke amongst Panther fans that we have all this money tied up in the RB position and the same Panther fans that rejoiced when we signed Stewie are the same Panther fans that called for Hurney's head and continue to bash all the money we have tied up in the RB position now.

BTW, just for the record. I was against extending Stewie then and I got ridiculed for it and I was in the minority. Well here we are now. Same exact situation. We have a ton of money tied up in one DE already (Charles Johnson) we have a promising up and coming Frank Alexander, we re signed our 6 sack DT in DWAN and oh BTW we drafted two DTs in the first two rounds of the draft. Meanwhile, we have one of the best young QBs in the league with only a 34 year old stud WR to show for it and HUGE question marks at WR beyond that.

Which brings me to Hakeem Nicks. Nicks is still young, a consistent, number 1 WR who is proven and would be an immense upgrade to our offense and WR corps. We are stacked at defense, quite possibly the best LB corps in the league, a stout and deep D line. What we dont have is another legit WR aside from Smitty that can be the future weapon for Cam for years to come.

Surely I cant be the only Panther fan that sees this as the same exact situation we where in last season before we signed Stewie. Havent we learned by now not to tie up all your money in a position you are already deep at when you have glaring needs elsewhere? Panther fans should know this more than anyone.

And let me just go on the record and state this has nothing to do with Hardy. No doubt he is one of the top 4-3 ends in the league and love his personality on the field. This has to do with our current situation as a team. Im not a Hardy hater by any stretch, a fantastic DE, I just think we have glaring need at WR.

A DE with Hardy's ability is extremely hard to come by. A WR with Nicks' ability, not so much. Moreover, Hardy is very hardy. Nicks, not so much.  A better defense > than a better offense, and provides the easier roadmap to success and championships.

I'd rather bet a relatively little on the draft, than the house on Nicks.

BTW, I  find it somewhat interesting that you didn't want to sign Stewart who has arguably been a better RB than Nicks has been a WR during their respective careers (and, yes, I know Stew has played one more year, but he accounts for nearly 1000 more yards even though he has played second fiddle to D-Lo). Nicks has missed double the games that Stew has.

What? Hardy hasn't had problems staying healthy like Stewart has, poor comparison.

Btw, Nicks has his own injury history too. To answer your question. Yes, you are.

I know that you know this, but I feel compelled to say that Stewart didn't miss hardly any games until last season.
