2013 Is The Year of No Excuses

Recommended Posts

Edit: Sorry to necro but I feel the need to point out we have 8 guys on IR and we haven't played a game yet.

One of the most concerning things to me about Ron Rivera these past few years is all the excuse making. "Young coaching staff", "young team", "injuries", etc... At some point you just have to say "fug it" and win anyways. This year I don't want to hear you were caught off guard. Or Chud was calling plays for a head coaching job, or the players didn't get their run fits correct. We play NFL football in the Carolinas. It's time to coach and perform at an NFL level.

How about if a player goes down Week 1 with a 12 week injury you keep him on the roster! How many guys have we buried on the IR early in the season because we had no plans for the playoffs? To me the IR seems to be a Panthers cop out. They bloat their IR so they can point to that when the losses pile up.

How about we out coach some teams this year! Last year it felt like whatever decision Ron made, be it conservative or aggressive, it just went horribly wrong. Stop playing the %s formulated over the last 20 years of NFL football and start making decisions based on what you see on the field right in front of you. If you can't stop the other team from scoring it's probably not a good time to trust your defense!

I expect good things from this team. 9-7 or better. If the team doesn't perform the only thing I want is an admission of failure. No more excuses.

Only way I see a valid excuse is if a certain awesome quarterback (knocking on wood and refuse to say a name so I don't jinx it) was to miss an extended period. Other than that, no playoffs means changes must be made. Our roster has holes, but a good coach CAN win with this roster.

I'm going to say that no one has any idea what will happen if we win 1 or 16 games except Gettleman and JR. Who's to say that Gettleman doesn't love Rivera ? I will bet that 8 or 9 wins will keep RR as coach another season.

The reason we use IR so much is because we have had zero depth. So if a guy gets a twelve week injury in week one, we typically put him on IR because they can't afford the roster space, not because they wanna use it as an excuse to point to later. At least that's always been my way of looking at it.

monsta hit it on the head. the hurney era has been marked by a deplorable lack of depth at virtually every position, so when one guy goes down, or a couple guys, it seems we're scrambling to find some sort of adequate replacement because everyone else on the roster is absolute poo. we still have our problems, but gettleman seems to have done a decent job thus far of upgrading the overall talent level of the team, even if we still have a couple starters that should only be second or third string.

and i think rivera knows it's playoffs or bust.

screw building rome. just build a team that can win games. if you think that is comporable to building an empire then you don't need to be coaching.

if we're losing by mid season we need to be looking for a new coach. find someone who can win with who we have.

i don't care how good of a defensive coach rivera is. if he can't get this team to at least a winning season then he needs to go back to being a DC.

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
