The corner competition.

That was me, and I was wrong. I just checked the game again. Melvin White was playing CB. I thought he was playing safety because he was in on a lot of plays.

Well I had heard some discussion on here before that maybe we should try him at safety.  6'1" 205 is a pretty solid safety.  So when I saw that I thought, ok they did.

If he was in on alot of plays that could be a good thing or he was making the tackle after the catch which might not be a good thing.

Thanks for the follow up though.

We have competition which is good but do we have the talent is the real question. We are going up against some really good wr/qb combinations this year.My logic says we brought in some players but none of them were starters

.If you remember the preseason buzz on Norman quickly vanished after the season started.

One thing for sure though Rivera has done an excellent job of player development so its really hard to tell.

Our DL will make our corners look better than they actually are this year.

No doubt but is that enough? I think that is what Gettleman is trying to determine before pulling the trigger on a db and ol. My guess is it will be crunch time after the next preseason game for Gettleman.

My concern would be....basically we went up against a WR corp built like ours without Steve Smith bothering to play......and they still ate us up on slants.

Quick slants are high % plays. By definition its a play that is completed more than not. Against any team. The Bears were using it because it was the only way they had time to throw.

I don't see us adding a DB, but Id be shocked if we didn't add another RG. I know Williams played decent, but we're pretty slim on depth.

How much do you think those two picks he had (One a pick 6) does to help his case to win back his starting job. I've said from the start of the off season Norman would be starting. But until last night it looked like Thomas was pulling away with this job. Also, did this game help ease some fears about our secondary or do you still think we have some work to do?

Thoughts?

What he did made his value skyrocket in the minds of fans like us. But people aren't considering 2 things.

1) it was magnified due to the fact that it was on the first defensive play on the first drive of the first game where everyone was excited, pumped, and watching. It wouldnt have had the same effect on our minds if he did it in the 2nd quarter of game 2.

2) the receiver (Alshon i think?) completely stopped on the route. I know a pick is a pick and sometimes u get lucky, but a good receiver makes that play.

I love the aggressiveness of our D thus far, just not getting excited about things until I see what he can do vs Julio/Colston

I didn't say that our secondary played lights out. I didn't say that they played a flawless game. I said that I now have more confidence in our secondary and I do...

TBH, I missed a lot of the distinction between the starting and second team units because I was so happy to be watching the Panthers playing, but I think we still have some work to do.  There were a few times I thought the secondary was a two-step away from disaster, but we didn't break.

It's going to be fun watching Norman out there. Like I said last year, if he can get his angles and distance down on a consistent basis, which he did in the other night's game, he is going to be someone that the opposing QB is always going to have to be cognizant of before they let loose the rock.  Will he get burned sometimes? Probably. But will he flourish overall? I believe that he will if he makes good choices on when to "thud 'em up", and when to snag the ball. It's only been one preseason game, but you can see his development from last year.

Norman gambles.  He jumps routes.  For every interception, he will be burned a few times. However, with this DLine, he can jump routes because he is likely to see slants and three step drops.

I thought quite the opposite of Norman last year. He didn't jump routes vs. Barden, he let him catch the ball then tackled him. Norman being a gambler would be an improvement.

He's not going to be that shut down corner like a Champ Bailey or Revis, but he's going to be a guy that will create turnovers by jumping route. I think he's somewhat similar to a Lardarius Webb; someone that he was compared to during last year's draft.

That's a good comparison. I've always said he reminds me of Asante Samuels, who's made a livin jumping routes.

Norman did some good things last year, he wasnt terrible. This lead me to believe he would have a good future, cant fault him for making mistake as a rookie corner. I knew he would get better and play like this. The guys who were taken ahead him last year were much worse for where they were drafted.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
