So, how worried should we be about Sean Mcdermott?

That would be up to Gettleman, ultimately. My guess, if they were to hire in house, would be Eric Washington. More of a proven commodity in the locker-room here.

GMs don't typically hire coordinators....they hire HCs. HCs hire their staff.

My 'worry' about McDermott is, will he be able to put a solid D on the field this year.  Up to this point, I have been more concerned about him 'staying on' more than being taken away.  It does look like our D may be solid this season if Friday tells us anything.  I don't think losing him would be that big of a loss actually.  My guess is between season 1 & last year Rivera put his stamp on the D, which made our D look better & therefore McDermott look better.

Steve Wilks was actually Rivera's first choice as a DC but San Diego didn't let him interview.

If McDermott were to get a new job, I figure the DC spot goes to Wilks.

it will either be wilks or mcdermmott as DC next year.

regardless of who it is, tho...it's rivera's defense.

it's not really worth worrying about.

If Mc D has a good season with the Defense improving on last years numbers I think it makes him a head coaching canidate for the season after next (2015)

So in essense even if all goes well(minus a superbowl run) he will be a canidate in 2015 with other D Coachs ready like Mike Zimmer and Nolan to go in 2014.

Lets hope for success bc it means he was doing his job and little turnover will happen to this team.

In my mind the worst case scenario is we are searching for a new staff and Cam is on his third coordinator and 2nd HC.

A major coaching churn will kill all this...so those who hate the Rivera should hope for nothing but success which some of you...do not seem to root for over you being right on a message board.

Also, lets not exaggerate. Last year.

# 10 in yards per game

#18 in points against

#16 in ypc against

#32 completion % against

People are taking that total yards number and running a little too much with it. We weren't a top 8 D....in any way. Overall, we weren't really a top 10 D.

We pressured the QB like an elite D last year.....we weren't an elite D yet though

Its been nothing but improvement since Rivera arrived. It went from a weakness to a strength. I expect a big leap this year. McDermott is fully capable IMO, and this part of our team is going to end their propensity to let us lose close games at the end.

truth.

We're kinda putting the cart before the horse.  McDermott is a good DC. He's young.  With success will come looks.  Nothing you can possibly do about that.

I am pretty sure the worst defense the Panthers ever had was in 2011. The 2010 defense was even better than the 2011 defense with zero offense. Rivera has only been here 2 years and one was a big defensive regression so you can't look at it as a constant improvement. Fox fielded a top 10 defense nearly every season he was here. His worst season was better than 1 of Rivera's two seasons to compare.

Last year was a dramatic improvement. I hope that trend continues but it wlll take many years to compare to the defenses of the previous regime.

beat me to the point.

Fellas, if we are going to be a competitive team consistently, we gotta get used to seeing coaches come and go. I know its Taboo having a coach leave not via firing, but its going to be OK. No need to worry.

We have a great football mind up top. He will get the "jab" done.

You are my favorite poster.  Just when I'm ready to feel good about something I get nervous and then BAM!! CRA to the fuggin rescue!  After a quick read I'm nice and comfy back in the depths of despair and malcontent.  Thank you sir, thank you.

Important thing is to built a stout defense, then whomever may take over will have the tools needed to continue on. If you have the right man in control to bring in the talent and keep it here, then a good part of the battle is won. I think D.G is the right guy to do this.

lol...D showed great improvement last year. Pass rush was fantastic. LB play was great.

Bc I point out people shouldn't proclaim us a top 8 D last year.....and weren't, even if you use only yardage? That is some defensive slam?

    • I’ve haven’t seen anything that says we have interest in Njoku?
    • I think the Njoku interest revealed intent and the type of TE they want.  I really expected more from Sanders.
    • Defensive tackle (or end in a 3-4 base) is suddenly a rather significant need.  It seems to be a forbidden topic on the Huddle.  Well I am going to unforbidden it for this thread. When we lost Robinson, it was a salary cap cutting move, saving us about $9m or so, I think.  That suggests that we are going to get cheaper, younger, and maybe, more multi-dimensional.  First, what did we lose in Robinson: (Charlotte Observer)  "Robinson co-led the team in sacks (5.5) in 2024, and he ranked second among Carolina linemen, behind Brown, in sacks (2.5) in 2025. (Derrick) Brown played on 76.4% of the Panthers’ defensive snaps last year, while Robinson played on 62.2% of those reps. No other defensive lineman played more than 38.3%, as free-agent addition, Turk Wharton, dealt with injuries throughout his first season in Carolina. Wharton played in just nine games, producing 36 total tackles and two sacks. He’s guaranteed $14 million this upcoming season. Read more at: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article314544998.html#storylink=cpy OK, about Turk Wharton.  The Observer claims that he and Bobby Brown III were to rotate into the Robinson DE position, but that is too weird for my head to comprehend.  First, Brown III is a NT by trade and Wharton weighs about 280 lbs and is not stout vs. the run.  Brown III is not going to provide the internal pass pressure; he is basically designed to take on double teams and dig in.  Wharton, on the other hand, had a PFF score in those 9 games of 40 or so.  In fairness, he was playing with injuries, but Damn.  PFF gives me a higher rating at the Golden Corral buffet.  In other words, we need a true DT who can fill the two thirds of snaps that we just released.  We can't count on Turk and Brown III is not the answer.  Cam Jackson?  Same as Brown.  Have your people do what they do best.  Furthermore, Derrick Brown probably should limit his snaps.  Playing more than 3/4 of the snaps is hard on the body.  A tired player in the trenches is more prone to lower-body injuries. We need a player who can give Derrick Brown some relief and play opposite him as well.  Turk can rotate in but he needs to shoot gaps and give Guards and tackles fits--a change of pace.   I have to think we are going to draft DT much sooner than most Huddlers realize.  My favorite, you didn't ask? Probable second-rounder Gracen Halton (No. 59 overall, according to ESPN's March 2026 update). Once considered a Day 3 sleeper, his 2026 NFL draft stock has exploded into Round 2 or 3 due to elite interior pass-rush metrics.  Projected Round: 2 (Early to Mid) Key Traits: Elite explosive, quickness, 12.2%+ pass-rush win rate, and positional versatility to play inside on passing downs. Combine Highlights: Led defensive tackles in the vertical jump (36.5”) and broad jump, per Sports Illustrated. Draft Stock: Rising fast due to consistent 2025 production (7 tackles for loss) and a "freak show" combine performance, according to Stormin in Norman.  Halton is considered a high-motor playmaker and a potential Day 2 standout, notes   I would not be surprised to see DT on day 2.
