Something to watch

One thing that has been bugging the heck out of me for the last two years is our offenses tendency to not get to the line until less than ten seconds remain on the play clock. I thought that maybe this would end once chud and his elaborate calls were gone, however through the first two preseason games it has been the same. I've never seen an offense call more timeouts than ours does and this hamstrings our defense or our offense in late half situations.

My question to you all is: who is to blame for this? Is it Shula? Is it a general lack of preparedness and focus that can be attributed to Rivera? Or is it Cam?

And before anyone freaks out with the "it's just preseason stuff", this observation spans over the Rivera-cam era.

"Pre-season stuff" is a rational. logical explanation. Since you classify that as a freak-out, that tells me you're looking for an emotional reaction.

One of my ex-girlfriends told me that I wasn't emotional enough for her. She said I only have 3 feelings, nicknamed the 3-H's. I only feel hot, hungry, or horny. I realized she was right.

Since I'm short on emotions and you're looking for con-firmation and not a con-versation, I hope you have a marvelous day.

Hmmm.  I am not so convinced this is happening as often as you think and it is not limited to the Panthers.  It does happen but I dont think you can sum it up by blaming it on the team not being prepared. If there were this mass confusion I think we would see a lot more signs such as a lot of delay of game penalties, illegal motion penalties and overall confusion.

The offense is also probably a bit more complicated that the Jeff Davidson student body left, student body right, draw play, punt offense that we were familiar with before Rivera.  That said, some of the extra time may be warranted.

Forget that preseason is the place you work this out.  Forget that we are running in 3 different offenses, we shouldn't call a timeout each half due to not having the right personnel on the field.  It means the first offense is going to struggle all year long.

Using the full measure of the play clock is generally by design, maximizing time of possession is to your teams benefit. Defenses wear out before offenses do. Keeping your defense off the field as much as possible is of utmost benefit to your team.

Having said that, we don't call more time outs at the last second than any other team, every team has a few here and there. There are tons of reasons that it happens and I wouldn't say that the Panthers have any particular problem with it.

    • generally speaking, going by the original NFL international marketing rights announcement... we would expect to host a Germany home game once every four years.  Doesn't mean we would play internationally only then, just the guarantee home game situation things might have changed since then, if they figure out how to play at more stadiums during a season to expand the number of "home" teams available
    • Munich won't happen. It's a Lions home game in Munich, but we play the Lions at home at BOA Most likely to happen would be Madrid vs the Falcons (although KC has been pushing hard for this one). From a schedule perspective, it would be interesting to have an early November Madrid game (then the bye week), then close out the season at BOA for the 2nd game vs the falcons.  In other words, put the two division games in the 2nd half of the season Paris vs the Saints has long been rumored to be the Browns (but... never say never) We wouldn't play Munich, Melbourne, Mexico City, London, or Rio based on who those announced home teams happen to be
    • Moton's knees were an issue before last season. He will be 32 before the season starts and gets 14.2M in '26 and 21.5M for '27 (not guaranteed). LT Icky and Rasheed Walker are signed through '26 and Freeling through '30 (option); LG Lewis signed through '28, C Fortner through '26 and Hecht through '29; RG Hunt through '28, RG Moton through '27.  They did a good job shoring up that oline.  We can have a starting oline of: LT Freeiling, LG Lewis, C Hecht, RG Hunt, and RT Moton pretty much locked up through the '27 season (will just take a Moton option to do). That's good because we need to be ready to pull the trigger with next year's QB class.
