In depth Panther preview from MMQB

It’s in the aerial game where Newton really needs to improve. The Panthers’ fate hinges not on whether the QB is a nice guy, but on whether he can throw with more consistent accuracy. Newton’s unacceptable bouts of erratic ball placement derive from poor footwork and bad habits in his release mechanics. It’s all correctable, and needs to be corrected, because Newton’s innately quick, powerful, compact delivery is too special to be flawed.

This is what all Panthers fans know. Is it really that hard to fix?

Didn't really say anything earth shattering, or anything any well-informed Panther fan didn't already know.  Still a good read.

It'll be interesting to see how Cam plays early in the season with a more traditional running game.  Really wish more emphasis was put on bringing in some depth on the O-Line this offseason.  The Panthers are two injuries away from having a JV O-Line blocking for one of the top young QB's in the game.

that may be the best panthers analysis by a mainstream outlet i've seen this year. i do think they underplay our OL woes (that or we're all collectively overplaying it, which would be great) and overplay our WR problem (which i think is largely nonexistent at this point.)

Man it's nice to read a fair, intelligent, in depth analysis about our team. I've forgotten the feeling.

I really do agree with him. Cam does need to improve footwork and our secondary will make a huge difference one way... or another.

So we should expect soft and simple again?

i hope not. they've been doing a lot more aggressive stuff in training camp and even i preseason games than last year so it's possible they will be more aggressive when it counts.

Through the ups and downs and perpetual shoulder chips, Smith has always maintained his speed, darting quickness, leaping ability and, most intimidatingly, low-centered strength.

Smitty gets his own made-up word!  w00t!

lol I laughed when I read this. Had to read it twice to be sure I wasn't seeing things. But it is so true.

I sure do hope that our "embarrassment of riches in the return game. Joe Adams, Kealoha Pilares and Ted Ginn Jr. are all great options" comes true.  It takes so much more than just a great return man. Lanes, people, lanes! Honestly sometimes our punt & kick off returns look like a version of Alice In Wonderland on her way to the tea party.

The answer....IMO is yes.

It's very hard to "fix" these issues at this stage of Newtons career.

He is having to "think" about every move he makes right now, at some point it will either become habit and the accuracy will improve, or we will always be delighted and frustrated by what our QB can do on the field.

Brett Favre and a young John Elway is what I see right now.

Your statements seems to contradict.

Any motion is correctable, just takes lots of work.

This season will begin the process of judging Cam on how much work he puts into being an elite QB. He was a development guy from the start, it's time for him to start developing.

Sorry, I probably worded it wrong.

Newton is having to "think" about where every receiver is, where every back is, what the D is doing, his footwork, and his throwing motion.

When the play starts to break down just a bit, he gets careless and makes some questionable throws, often high.

As the game slows down, and his isn't as jumpy I think that with enough work, his mechanics will get better, and his accuracy will improve....or it won't and we will have to deal with it.
