Why we need Wharton to be in better shape right now.

Gettleman: We are confident in our offensive line.

Williams averaged 5.1 ypc and the line allowed one sack and one hit on the quarterback. Overall those are pretty good stats for this patchwork line. Seattle's defensive line was not 100% but these are better numbers than anyone could have predicted before the game.

Williams avoided the A gap all game. That ypc is going to go way down if that continues.....opponents will have an easier time with him if he is that predictable.

They did a decent job of run blocking, but as mentioned, the A-gaps were always filled. DeAngelo made some tough runs, but couldn't get the 2-3 yards we absolutely needed on 3rd and short a couple of times (although part of the blame is shared by DeAngelo's questionable decisions on which lane to use).

Pass blocking, yes Cam only got sacked once, but he was hurried and seemed intent on getting the ball out on short, quick throws. I think part of the reason why we didn't attempt many deep shots is because the O-Line is in such shambles (obviously another part of it was Seattle's secondary).

Don't forget that Seattle was missing two of its three best pass rushers in Irvin and Clemmons.

If we want him to block shifty linebackers, he needs to be much faster. Smith blows right by him and gets an arm on Deangelo.

Bell (lying on the ground) Also gets man handled and his man finishes off the tackle.

Hate to break it to you but Wharton is a couple/four weeks away from being in relatively good condition.

Trust me, I know all about ( or at least my mirror does) overweight, out of shape guys that attempt to do something that is above their physical limitation. It never ends well.

    • This play was never designed to go to either DJ or Odunze. The primary read is Burden who is stymied early, with the outlet being Kmet if Caleb doesn't like the option for Burden. Given the situation it's pretty obvious the simple play is to take the free yards with Kmet, or if you want to be aggressive just wait a beat longer for Burden to uncover on his double move. If Moore was ever going to be a viable target in this play then Caleb should have started out reading Odunze to hold the safety in the middle and then coming to Moore, but because he started the snap staring down the right and then came back to the middle late it made it where the safety's leverage remained to the outside of Moore, so he would never have imagined that pass actually being thrown to him in that situation. Realistically DJ's best option in that context is to just occupy the safety to leave a hole open for Caleb to get it to Burden, which is probably why he throttles down vs carrying the safety across.
    • Even with Sonny Styles still on the board I thought it's a no brainer to address the Oline after Icky's injury.  And how can you pass up Fano at 19 given our situation. Then the rest of the draft just kind of made sense with maybe the exception of Klubnik.  But if Canales can fix him and Young goes down. . .I think it's a solid pick. What do you think of this draft?
