Behind Enemy Lines - Buffalo Bills

Here are a few things worth mentioning about the Panthers upcoming Buffalo Bills opponent.

Bills Safety Jaruis Byrd missed the Bills home opener last week due to injury. It looks like he may miss this week as well.

"I'm just waiting on my feet, honestly," Byrd said. "Whenever they get ready and get right, that's when I'll be able to go out there. I have to be 100 percent to be out there and be ready to go."

Byrd said his treatment plan for his feet includes orthotic inserts in his shoes, creams and stretching. He did not know when he'll be able to return to playing.

Byrd suffers from Plantar Fascitis, an inflammatory foot condition that affects the heel. The bad news for Byrd is that in most chronic cases, this is a degenerative condition that may not heal. Byrd is also not happy about his fanchise tag, and could be jockeying for a trade.

ESPN did an article on grading the Bills Cornerbacks

Reliability: D. There's some experience here, especially with McKelvin, but it remains one of the younger positions on the Bills' roster. Four of the top five options are currently injured or were injured at some point during training camp, and the remaining player, Robey, is a rookie. It's a combination of injury history and lack of experience that earns the position this grade. When the game is on the line, nobody really knows how these players will fare.

Overall, they had very poor grades. Going from Seattle corner backs to Buffalo cornerbacks should be an advantageous one for the Panthers wideouts. Armanti Edwards and Domenik Hixon are both healthy and should see playing time. If there is a game where they can prove their worth, this is it.

Buffalo News is concerned about the Bills third down efficiency...

Third-down conversions doomed the Bills’ up-tempo game plan. The Bills went 4 of 13 on third downs, which had an average of 6.6 yards to go. They needed to gain only 1 or 2 yards on five of those third downs, and did so only twice.

If the BIlls struggled on third down against against a weak Patriots defense, expect them to struggle even more against the Panthers.

According to Buffalo News, EJ Manuel plans on throwing deep against the Panthers..

EJ Manuel wasn't coy about the Buffalo Bills' offensive objectives Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

In response to a question about throwing deep on the Panthers, Manuel said, "It's extremely important. You want to stretch the field, and that's what we plan on doing."

Panthers cornerback Josh Thomas had a poor showing against Seattle, but I do not expect that to happen two weeks in a row. Sunday's game is a homecoming for Thomas, who attended university at Buffalo. Thomas will bring his A game, no player wants to perform poorly in his college town.

In one of the scouting threads the OP said their secondary was on par with that of Seattle's- this is where I stopped reading.

I watched some of the first half and they only thing that impressed me was their front 7 and Manuel's poise in the pocket.

Their four down linemen are a good bunch. Williams and Williams are very good. Carriker actually stood out to me due to his explosion off the line and ability to penetrate quickly. This will be a test for the interior line. Darius is good, but inconsistent according to their fans. Their LB's are gap sound and aggressive, I think screens and a draw or two could produce big results. You can tell they're well coached with how quickly they read their keys and move to the ball carrier.

I do think we'll be able to run against them and protect Cam. Should be a good match up.

It has been long three days since the Seattle game. I have watched the Williams fumble like six times :(

Today is the first day I feel back to normal, and now getting pumped for Sunday.

This is s big game. Both teams need this win. I imagine a very hard fought chippy game.

Hopefully we can confuse and aggravate a rookie QB and force him into some mistakes.

i've got plantar fascitis right now. i got it towards the end of july and its still hurting when i wake up and when i spend even an hour walking around. it's a frustrating and very nagging injury that takes a long time to heel. in the literature i got from the doctors office it said that 80% may be pain free in about a year. my wife thought that was funny for some reason. point is, he's not going to be playing anywhere near 100% if he plays, at least not for very long. i think their secondary as is will be easy to exploit and even if byrd is there and able to play, he's just one guy. throw to someone that isn't being covered by him.

i think our secondary will still be a weak link, but i think that manuel will be easier to pressure and rattle than wilson and i hope he does try to go vertical because it's quite likely he'll be forcing some throws that will be result in bad/ill-timed throws that our DB will find easy to capitalize on, which is one thing they are good at doing....capitalizing on mistakes the QB makes.

Good post, Zod. And 5-6 years ago a post like that would have had me excited but at this point I am just waiting for this team to find a way to lose. That is a shitty way to spend time being a fan. It seems we either have a mental break down or a physical break down or both every week. Then we get to hear the excuses and how things will change next week. Rivera needs to have this team ready to kick some ass the minute they run out of the tunnel. No excuses this week.

Panther Defense Need to Attack The Left Side http://espn.go.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/818/pff-colin-brown-earns-worst-week-1-grade. The Buffalo Bills had an open competition at left guard during training camp to replace Andy Levitre, who departed through free agency.

Brown

After cycling several players through the position, fourth-year veteran Colin Brown was tabbed as the starter. He started all four preseason games and continued in that role for Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots

But according to ProFootballFocus.com, which grades every player on each play, Brown finished with the worst aggregate grade in.gif of any in the NFL for Week 1.

When people said that the Bills' left guard spot was a problem area, they weren't lying, were they? Brown beat out
for the starting job (which isn't the hardest thing in the world to do) and promptly did his best to force his coaches to reconsider their decision. In a week that saw some terrible guard play, his took pride of place, giving up a hit and three hurries and being punished against the run. If you could see our grading sheet, you'd see a lot of "stood up at point of attack" next to the name of Brown, who was no match for
.

Not saying I'm not excited. I can't wait to watch the game. I just have this doubt or trepidation nowadays and its because of Rivera. Wish I didn't.

I'm fairly bipolar when it comes to football. I complain mon - wed but my short memory lets me be excited by Thursday. The Rivera usually brings me back down on Monday again.
