best analysis of rivera's history of close losses

In fairness, if Rivera goes for it on 4th and 1, and the team fails to move the chains.....................  The majority would be saying he should be fired for not taking the points...

Don't get me wrong, I'm just as fed up as everyone else, but, it's much easier for us to coach a game Monday morning, than it is to coach one on Sunday afternoon...

No

Just simply no.

If we had went for it and failed no one would care, because Rivera would have finally shown some balls.

Also like the stats and common sense state....they would have likely tied the game rather than won it....so we would have had OT.

It's like he forgets who our personnel are when it matters most. He doesn't get ebb and flows of the game.

if i'm Rivera I tell Shula, put the ball in Cam's hands, he is the leader of our team and he is our best player. It's on him. And Cam wants it that way. 16 of 18 conversions. This is absolute madness.

Yeah, but it's the play calling before that (as hit's been in the past), that I was more upset about.

Rivera was basically trying to run down the clock, as if he had a 14 pt lead with that one minute left.

It was that type of play calling, which put the Panthers in that 4 &1 situation to begin with.

Where the slants, quick screens, bootlegs etc.? You notice how the Panthers were wildly fooled, leaving a Receiver wide open to close the game?

When's the last time a Panther WR caught a ball by himself like that (or a RB run into the end zone untouched). That's play calling.

we had an 81% chance of that working. 19% chance of failure.

we've seen him use that strategy he used to lose this game how many games before? how often has his method of end of game management worked?

if he did something different that showed he had grown a set, even if it failed, i wouldn't be nearly as upset as i am now.

what has me pissed off isn't losing that game to buffalo. it was losing it the same damn way we've lost most of our games. by inviting the other team to beat us by giving them the ball.

it's stupid and we have a 2-14 record in games decided by seven points or fewer.

quoting barnwell again...

It's not that he's making decisions that go against the numbers, nor is it that he's choosing the most tentative, risk-averse option available to him. It's that he refuses to recognize his team's strengths and adapt his decision-making to incorporate them. This isn't Thank You For Not Coaching; it's Thank You For Not Learning.

.

Rivera turned to his defense and — yet again — it failed him. The strength of the Carolina pass defense is its pass rush, which isn't always quite as noticeable in the fourth quarter after a full day of chasing after players. Its weakness is the secondary, which is exactly what shows up when the other team is trying to throw the ball to make plays downfield on every single snap. And sure enough, just like Haruki Nakamura got beat for a big play by Matt Ryan last season, the secondary failed Carolina when it needed it most on Sunday.

.

.

.

The problem is that Rivera is running his team by remaining obstinate and without properly adjusting his process to account for the players he has available. That's an essential part of the job, and it's Rivera's biggest failing as a head coach.

That article was the best summary of Ron Rivera as a head coach I have ever read. He fails to adjust his strategy to the game, especially in the 4th quarter. A good head coach would use Cam properly and know what the strengths and weaknesses of his team is at the time. Who would trust their defense to stop the Bills when 4 players on the secondary were already injured in the game? Why not go for it on 4th and 1 and WIN THE GAME? Come on Ron, ONE first down and we WIN THE GAME!!!! WTF???? At worst, we didn't make it and the Bills still have to drive 80 yards to win with less time on the clock than before.

Disagree entirely - it would've shown that he learned something and then perhaps it would have been a matter of poor execution after all.  At this point, if the same scenario comes up next week I would so rather see him pull the trigger than take a field goal.

I disagree wholeheartedly

I would have defended it because of our history.

Bills would then have played for a FG.

Why? Because the game may have went to overtime?

Dont' get me wrong, I'm not saying it was or wasn't the right call...  I'm saying if it fails, and we still lose 24-20, it doesn't change a thing, and we're simply upset about something different this morning...

either way, I want what the rest of us want, and that's to finish the f'ing game strong, and not to feel like schite every monday morning all fall/winter long...

I understand, I do...  I read the piece...  I'm simply saying if it fails, and we lose, we're still upset...  At least I know I am...

Not with our history.  The point was made that going up by 6 rather than staying at 3 puts the Bills in desperation mode, where they could have settled for a FG to tie if needed.  A 6 point lead with less than 3 minutes left is LESS valuable than a 3 point lead.  But alas, a defense coach put out a unit that has given up TD's time and time again at the end of games.  Yea, they are the better unit but not in crunch time.

yes, i'd still be upset, but i'd at least have hope that rivera understood he needed to do something differently to try and win.

right now i have no hope. no faith. no confidence.

and it's all due to rivera doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results.

our secondary is weak, even moreso yesterday. he puts this team constantly into situations that the other team relies to try and move their team quickly down the field.

guess what the other team is going to do?

it doesn't play to our strength. it plays to our weakness and i honestly, as an opposing team's coach, couldn't wish for a better situation at the end of the game than to have a chance to exploit the other team's weakest link.

You are wrong. They wouldn't have bitched about the decision they would have blamed it on the play call... no matter what it was.
