Steve Smith 2013 Stats

I know it has only been 2 games and that is a very small sample but the numbers for Steve thus far are troubling.

Through 2 games, he has a career worst 9.4 YPC. His 51.5 YPG are his second lowest as a full time starter since the 2010 debacle. At that clip, he is on pace for 824 total yards.

What can you make out of those numbers? Either Steve is declining or Shula does not know how to utilize Steve and his strengths. Granted most of us wished he move to the slot but Shula with his short routes do not play to Steve's play making ability.

Shula is calling plays designed more for players in the mold of Wes Welker as opposed to the like of Victor Cruz. Granted Cam has missed Steve on a couple long ones and Steve has lost a step but the 5 yard speed outs and dinky dunk hitch routes are not using the weapons you have to their full potential.

#89 is the only WR worth a damn on the roster and he is being used on dinky dunk crap routes.

On a positive note, Steve is #23 on the all time receiving list at 11,555 yards. Assuming he can squeeze another 800 yards in there (1,000 for the season), he will move to #17 all time moving past Jimmy Smith, Charlie Joiner, Hines Ward, Derek Mason, Michael Irvin and Don Maynard.

Slightly negative note.....Andre Johnson is on his tail and will more than likely pass him up this year with 11,476 yards.

Have a great day!

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
