David Gettleman Cleaning House

The sudden release of Armanti Edwards has Panthers fans scratching their heads. Not because they feel Armanti deserved a roster spot, mind you, but because of the timing. Armanti was released on a Tuesday after a game he was barely involved in and made no noticeable mistakes. On a list of players who were at fault for the loss to the Cardinals, Armanti would be near the bottom. Commence head scratching.

It is becoming clearer now that 2013 is a year for David Gettleman to clean house. Unproductive, often injured, or otherwise irrelevant players.... watch your back.

Jimmy Clausen, Jon Beason, Armanti Edwards, David Gettis. All players that have been Panthers mainstays for years, but have contributed little on the field. Marty Hurney would have held on to these players out of sentiment and the promise of one day contributing.

Apparently, David Gettleman is not the sentimental type.

The Armanti Edwards release was a shot across the bow of the Panthers roster. Improve, produce, or get gone... no matter how well you are liked personally. Panthers players have become relaxed in their position on the team. If I were you I would not be laughing on the sidelines during a loss, or you could be next.

Don't think for a moment that the coaching staff has not noticed as well. If Gettleman can release a panthers mainstay player with the flick of a pen, then he can do the same with a coach. After all, it is the coaches who have failed to develop their players into aggressive performers with a winning mentality.

What seems harsh to some is actually the mind set of winning franchises. I guess that's why we are not accustomed to it.

A cleaner, meaner Carolina Panthers franchise is in our future.

This offseason is going to be fun.  Gettleman is setting us nicely to be active in free agency.

We aren't going to have any other choice.

Between our own FA, guys signed to 1 year deals, and the surprise cut or two, we will have a lot more spots to fill than we can get in the draft.

This team is going to look much different next year. Whether that is good or bad is the unanswered question.

Wasted season. Said it before it started DG wasn't looking at 2013 but 2014...

Jerry forced him to endure RR but he wasn't going to help him.

He is getting rid of Hurney guys....what new GMs do. He will find his own guys to be painfully loyal to. For example, why he cut AE over Hixon. Hixon just as irrelevant at WR and sucks on ST.

Maybe because Hixon actually has caught a few TD's in the league?

Am I the only one that is starting to miss Marty Hurney? For the first time in about 5 years, I believe that we have a team that can win but coaching is holding us back. Mark my word, Gettleman is wanting to see if Cam can be a pocket passer, which we all know he is not. Cam will be gone in 2 years b/c Gettleman feels that you must have a pocket passer to win in this league, he has said it before. Richardson should have hired a guy that wants to put a o-line and weapons around him. I really just don't buy what Gettleman is selling right now!!!!

He also said 'we have the quarterback already'

    • It's not impossible to go from worst to first.  We kept Evero because anyone in there right mind knew our defense was destroyed by injuries, not the scheme.  Evero has been given a plethora of talent between free agency and the draft, not to mention getting DB back. I fully expect our defense to be very good.  I have no reason to think Jones would say something like that unless he truly felt like that.
    • We would’ve played Florida and lost in the 1st instead of the 3rd round.  Montreal would have been the 8 seed.
    • I can't get behind a purely subjective re-draft as a method of defining "top-10 QB" status. That invites bias based on vibes/hypotheticals and can ignore actual on-field performance. You and others have said that Bryce has to be a top-10 QB to justify the pick. That's a high bar, which I'm not against, but we need a clear, consistent way to measure it. When I bring up metrics that Bryce has registered in the top-10 in like BTT%, P2S ratio, catchable deep ball rate, etc... they're waved off as either irrelevant or the expected baseline performance. Meanwhile, volume stats like passing yards or win-loss records, both of which depend heavily on roster talent, health, and coaching, are treated as definitive. That's where the inconsistency kicks in. If no performance metric ever counts in his favor and the answer is always going to be "he should be doing that," then we're not evaluating him... we're just holding him to a curve he can't win against. If this is really about performance standards, then let's define them. But if it's just about confirming prior takes based on height and weight, then let's call it what is it and stop pretending that this is a football analysis discussion.
