Ideal 1st Round Pick for Carolina [UPDATED]

I think with gman we will go BPA regardless so it's a toss up at this point my dream scenario is mike Evans from A&M but the way he's playing I don't see him making it out of the top 10....I personally am done thinking about the draft till after the season I'm enjoying what I'm seeing right now

So if BPA is a MLB we will draft him?

We wont. We will take the BPA within our primary needs.

BPA does not reflect where you have stars. For instance, QB is removed from our board for the first 3 rounds. MLB is removed, you can never have enough DEs so that isn't removed despite the fact we have good ones (barring Hardy looking for a big payday elsewhere which is likely at this point). Another positions not on our board for the first 3 rounds would be RB, all others are fair game.

Ummmmm that's exactly what I ment it's still impossible to tell at this point and up in the air between OL, DBS and WR we will take the BPA of what's available of those could of phrased it better in my earlier post but I was simply saying I don't think there's going to be a predetermined "we re taking this position in the first and this in the second"'more of how the cookie crumbles

I don't believe talent and potential can be separated. Talent is a measure of potential and in my opinion your talent level is constant. Your skills may increase, but your talent stays.

There are two measures for talent.

Talented physically / athletically

Talented in regards to skill

You could argue three

Talented in regards to mental IQ / understanding of the game

Potential has to do with a guy who possesses a combination of the above but not all. Generally athletically and needing to develop his skills and the mental aspect of the game.

I realize that this thread is nearly a month old, but a lot of you are saying OL with the first pick. I am not sure that is the case.

I think Gross will be back for 1 more season.

If Chandler continues to impress, he could play LT after getting some experience at RG.

We get Silatolu, kugbila, Williams back

We also have Wharton who could be solid depth for another season

I personally think we will draft a T and a G/C, but not until the third round.  Of course, much could change.

If a WR or CB drops to us, that will be our pick if we think either would be a game changer.  If we do not re-sign Hardy, a DE could be the choice.

Making assumptions like that will kill your team.

Ex.

Dwayne Jarrett to become the next Moose

Armanti to become the next steve smith

I don't want Cam's blind side to be protected by a converted defensive linemen. OL is a must in round 1 or 2. Chances are a round 3 or later OL will not unseat a starter or be significantly better. That is one of the reasons we haven't found our next WR. If you keep drafting WRs in round 3-7 chances are you won't get a great WR1.

Panthers got super lucky with smith in round 3 but these days the great WRs are drafted in round 1.

Calvin Johnson, Dez, AJ Green, Julio, D Thomas, Andre Johnson, Fitz

You may get lucky and find a gem like victor cruz, brandon marshal (round 4) or wes welker (undrafted) but there is a low chance for that

Extremely optimistic, but there are a lot of OTs who were DTs and TEs etc. in college before settling on the OL. I am guessing that Gross comes back--I would never put all the eggs in the Chandler basket.

Realistically, he is going to be a career backup

Agree. If he becomes solid depth, that would be a huge win

My post was not clear---I mentioned Chandler as a legit backup LT IF Gross comes back for another year.  I think he wlll.

Great comments about WR--you mention some studs.  However, there have been many more first rounders who have not made it to #1 status in the NFL.  This year, there are a few WRs who are solid.  Last year, I was SO glad we didn't draft one.

If Gross does not return, you have no choice but to go OT very early.  I am guessing we pick in the 20s, so the top 3 or 4 OTs will be gone.  However, I really like La'el Collins (LSU) and James Hurst (UNC).

At WR, I see 2 locks (like AJ and Julio a few years back--Watkins and Evans) but then I see some that have concerns.  For some reason, I see Jordan Matthews in a Panther helmet.

There are some very solid WRs all the way into the third round, but they would be projects.  We need a guy who is our #1 from day #1.

That is why I say, "Not so fast" on the OT talk--we could have Gross back, Chandler behind him.

    • That was always the fear, expectation, concern, etc, I had.  Someone showed a still shot from his pick last game and said it showed that the defender closed 3 yards on that ball in the last portion of its flight. I forget the number. 10 yards I think it said but that sounds extreme.  When guys are open by a step, any slowing down to wait for the ball lets the defender back into the play. That sort of stuff makes the margins so small… these NFL CBs are not slow.   It is a league that highly values foot speed; the 40 times and drill times are scrutinized down to the hundredth of a second when evaluating these players on both sides of the passing game. Receivers and defenders both.   My thing with his arm strength (or anyone’s) was always “why do you want to do that? Plus pay extra picks to put yourself in that situation?”. Asking for trouble.     I wish there was a way to measure velocity on the back half of a throw compared to when it left the hand. Or really get accurate reading of the flight time of a ball from the near hash to the sideline, 10 yards down the field. Because teams could use that info. I have always seen this as being a disadvantage with Bryce but it is beyond my ability to quantify it.   I think it would show what that arm strength is really about, a lot more than just measuring how much air can you put under it so it will fly as far as possible.
    • Who didn't see that coming....
    • Its a detriment if he can't play...as we are seeing.
