Was Losing Godfrey The Biggest Step In Turning The Defense Around?

I don't think you know how wrong you are... Godfrey has consistently been one of the lowest rated safety's in the nfl the past few years in all category's missed tackles blown coverages and coverage (not blown).

One season of having 6 Ints and he got got himself a big contract and pulled a fast one on fans.

Mitchell >>>>>>>> Godfrey and Mikel >>>>> Mitchell (at ss he is more of a natural at FS were he can roam and hit).

My point is we don't know about Mitchell and the rest of the secondary until we see them play against teams who will put them to the test in the passing game.  Until then, I'm not convinced they are any better on the back end.

I have to clarify that the biggest step in turning the defense around was actually keeping Sione Fua's snaps down but Godfrey was consistently the worst safety for years and it seems as if the entire time Hurney shoehorned him to be the de facto no.1 safety on the team because he was too busy putting effort into signing 800 running backs to contracts always hoping that at some point he'd settle in, which he never did and if you choose to completely disregard PFF's bad reviews of his play every single year then you are most likely either a retard or somehow share the same bloodlines as him

QFT.

I'd also like to add that I have said repeatedly on this board throughout the years that the biggest problem under Hurney and Fox's regime was them handing out jobs to guys without making them earn it. That continued for the most part under Rivera the first two years of his tenure (from the outside looking in, at least)... I don't think it's coincidental that the first season we have significant turnover based on earned playing time, we are having our most success under Rivera.

Now, injuries forced his hand to make moves at certain positions, but it also forced him to then decide on the best player available based on their performance. Once the unquestioned incumbents were lost, Rivera had to play the best guy...

This guy gets it.

I've made no bones about it that I've never been a fan of Godfrey. I was pissed when we gave him the extension, and even more so when I found out about how much money came with it. He's just not that good, guys.. has nothing to do with his jersey number, has nothing to do with him as a person. He just lacked the talent to play Safety in the NFL. I will say that I believe it's not entirely his fault, as he is yet another converted position player, but once he was in that spot, he should have improved to at least be serviceable, but I don't feel he ever did.

With that said, it's a combination of a lot of what has already been said here between his absence and subsequent place on the IR list, the improvement of our front seven as a whole, and Rivera being more aggressive on both sides of the ball. However, it's not one just one man until that one man is the last hope of stopping the other guy. When that man is Godfrey, you have only a 50/50 shot of doing so.

I think Godfrey is still one of the best on the field. Just because we are playing well without him means he's the problem? He is great player and I cant wait to see him back on the field.

Godfrey is what I call a "highlight reel player".

If you only watch the highlights, you see him show up from time to time with a big hit or interception and you're left with the impression he's pretty good.

Watch him through an entire game though, see all the plays that don't make the highlights, and you get a very different read on his ability.

The biggest steps in turning our defense around (in descending order of importance):

1) Drafting Luke and giving him the MLB position.

2) Drafting Star and KK and bringing in Cole, keeping guys like Fua, Kearse and Neblett out of our lineup.

3)Replacing guys like Godfrey, Nakamura and Martin with Mitchell, Mikell, and Lester.

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
