Let me start this week's version of After Further Review with big applause for Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

His plan against the San Francisco 49ers was outstanding. He caused a lot of confusion for the 49ers line, and even more so for quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That led to the 49ers getting nine points on the day, seeing the Panthers sack Kaepernick six times and the 49ers being limited to 91 yards passing as Carolina won 10-9.

To go to San Francisco and beat up the 49ers the way they did is something this defense can use as evidence to be considered one of the best.

The front seven certainly is that.

Excellent write-up by Pete Prisco over at cbssports.com.  Details the various blitz schemes the Panthers used against the 49ers and shows what a poor passer Colin Kaepernick is.  Definitely worth a read.

We will do some very different things this week.  Kaepernick will make those mistakes but Brady won't.  Expect a defense that doesn't take as many chances or blitz that often.  It will mean that We give up more yards this week but will try to avoid giving the big play.  It will be more of a shootout this week.  That being said I still think 24 points might win it.  Now that I declared it,  it will likely be the first one to 50.   What do I know.....

Don't miss a few key comments.

There were open receivers, CK didn't see them or wasn't ready to throw them.

That won't be the case with Brady.

May have been part of the gameplan.  There are open receivers on almost every play.  You can't cover them all.  Panthers might have just seen that Kaepernick focuses in on his first read so the Panthers took it away and made him beat them with his arm.  It worked.

This weeks game is going to boil down to three things.

1st: Cam making no mistakes and being very very efficient with the ball.

2nd: The running game must be there for us. Pats are week right now against the run. Get that started and then start using play action passes.

3rd. Defense must beat up the rookie Wr's and cover the TE. TE is the only real threat in the passing game to me.

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
