How and why Kuechly played perfect coverage

I just watched the play. By the time Luke begins to hug Gronk, the ball is already thrown and is almost in Lester's hands, so that cannot be holding. The ball was also underthrown and Gronk could not have caught it so no PI there. I don't see what people are bitching about. Watch the play yourself and see when Luke begins to hug.

Truth is that if Keek had turned to look at the ball and didn't have his arms wrapped around Gronk he would have seen that the ball was way underthrown and Gronk couldn't have caught it.  He made a stupid play in the endzone and got away with it.  But he surely shouldn't be excused or made a hero for doing it.

Just sayin...........................

If there is a hero in this situation, it's Lester.  Without him being in position to intercept that pass, then interference would have been called and ball placed at the 1 foot line for an untimed down to win or lose the game.  Cam Newton was the MVP of offense, but Lester deserves game ball for that play alone.

meh. it was a risky play but you play to win these types of contests.

luke demonstrably didn't do anything wrong. he played within the constraints of the rules.

as far as i'm concerned he's a hero for covering his man well enough to make it difficult to return towards the ball and allowing lester to step in front of it.

All in all...refs seemed to make the right call (I am super biased of course) but if the rule states that it can't be PI if the ball is intercepted, then that's what happened.  THe ball was out of Brady's hand before Luke made that contact.  Panthers got lucky because I could easily see the Pats (esp. Brady/Gronk) getting that call.  In fact, it kind of blows my mind that they didn't.  Even so, the refs did all they could to bolster the Pats.  Just not getting this one call really isn't a terrible injustice.

Let's not forget that Cam led his team on a game winning drive that ended with 1 minute left in the game.  Too bad that's not the story ESPN wanted to talk about.  If that same play had happened to Cam/Olsen and the refs picked up the flag, only Stuart Scott would have cared.  Dilfer and Young would have been all up Brady's butthole with praise and you wouldn't have seen them complain.  They would have been touting the rule and Gerry Austin wouldn't even have been brought in to do commentary.

Of course ESPN is like homer nation Pats fans.  THey are in Conn. after all.  You might say that the Patriots are the official NFL team of ESPN.

It was a huge, impressive win for Carolina and that doesn't sit well with the Tom Brady fan club.  Perhaps fortune smiled on us on that last play, but in the end, no matter the circumstance, we scored more points than them and a win is a win.

It will be interesting to see if they withhold credit from us for our position in the playoff picture.  We have beaten SF and NE in back to back weeks (after they were coming off bye weeks) and are for real one of the top 3 teams in the NFC.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
