Red Zone D stat from ESPN blog

If we end the season at the 13ppg allowed mark it will be more impressive than the 10 ppg allowed mark the Ravens set in 2000.

That's the truth, no homerism. It will never get the recognition and anyone who mentions it would be laughed at nationally, but it is more impressive. I'm not saying this defense is better, but that mark is more impressive.

The league had changed dramatically since then. The rules have drastically changed the game. I still can't believe we're only allowing 13ppg. Ron Rivera is a defensive mastermind. And to think, 90% of this fan base wanted him gone for 18+ months up until a few weeks ago.

Totally agreed. Since the Patriots got a rule created bc they held all of the Colts WRs in the playoffs with zero flags...the WR/CB defense is quite different.

13 ppg is incredible.

there is a large percentage that still do.

gtfoh, who is this large percentage that still wants him gone when we are having a 9-3 season and one of the longest win streaks? If anything rivera is in the driver seat regarding his contract extension as he would get picked up very easily by another team if we ditch him.

there have been threads weekly stating if we don't win a playoff game he should not be given an extenison.......

do a search and go back and read all the threads about how he should be fired.

It may not be nearly as strong as before, but there's some folks who just don't care for Rivera. They are mostly silent now.

The main reason that won't show up in stats per se is the ball control of the offense. I think the panthers are at or near the top in long drives.

This is good for our d. They are rested and this comes in handy in the 2nd half.

I saw some of those posts. 1) They were clearly delusional, 2) It wasn't many. Rivera's job is secure as long as we get to the playoffs.

no households names outside of the Carolinas, but they are still very much a part of this great defense.

I think Keek will probably go national when our team continues to win. Rivera very quietly made one of (if not the best) defense in the league so I think any question of his job security (at least for now) has been answered.

Other good stuff in that article:

During the win streak, the Panthers are 8-of-8 on fourth-down conversions

The Panthers have held their opponents scoreless on a trip to the red zone seven times.

Newton Facing 5+ Pass-Rushers
This Season   1st 4 Gms Past 8 Gms Comp pct 58.6% 64.4% TD-Int 2-4 7-2 Sacks 11 8 Total QBR 11.1 90.0

All that stuff is pretty impressive.

The D redzone stat....that is AWESOME!

    • I wonder if the Hornets view Kon and McNeeley more as forwards and plan to ship off Green/Okogie/Smith for center help. I hope they don’t plan to ship off Sexton as I like what he brings to the team. (2) G - Ball, Mann, Simpson (two-way) (3) G - Sexton, Dinwiddie, Connaughton (3) F - Miller, Knueppel, McNeeley, James (two-way) (3) F - Bridges, Williams, Salaun (3) C - Diabate, Kalkbrenner, Plumlee
    • 3 main reasons he was better in 2023 and none of them concern me for his NFL prospects 1. Totally new coaching staff that was a massive downgrade and had god awful play calling and designs, the entire fan base was ready to run the coaching staff out of town a month into their first season and the play caller ended up getting changed because it was so bad. 2. Along with the staff downgrade, his QB played significantly worse after being the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023.  Constantly missed T-Mac when he was wide open, lost out on a number of TDs and a good amount of yardage, half the time T-Mac still almost made miraculous catches on the bad passes too. 3. He hurt his ankle over the summer and missed all of fall camp only to return to practice a few days before the season started and I think he had to deal with it all season long and was slightly limping at times mid season too, but kept fighting through it to still be a 1st team All American.
    • Good luck to Burns. He’s fine as a third pairing defensemen but Rod is too stubborn to do that.
