Ron Rivera's Status

With 10 NFL coaches making over 6 million per year , he'd be foolish to accept your 3,5/yr offer. It's going to come down to what's his relationship with Gettlemen like. We might add 1 year now at 5-6 million.

And those names include Belichick, Payton, Shanahan, Reid, Carroll, Coughlin... a class that Rivera is nowhere near yet, and Coughlin's even only around 6.5 mil with 2 rings. That's why it's a nice raise for a couple of years to prove this isn't a fluke, and then the big paycheck. I'm not dissing Rivera here - it's just logical business.

Big risk. If he does win next year, we have nothing to keep him around to even talk. We hold no option for 2015, so there's nothing we can do to make him even talk. We need to add a year and tweak his number up from 3rd from the bottom of the league.

i could get behind this (not that it matters). i just don't like the idea of a multi-year deal just yet. let's wait to see what happens next year.

The only Head coaches making less than Rivera this year are Chud for the Browns and Allen for the Raiders. Several first year coaches are making quite a bit more. A bump from 3 to 3.5 million won't change that. League average for head coaches is over 4.5 million. I think he's shown to be at least average.

He is over .500 as a head coach.

My thought was to add a year at 5 or 6. He makes 3.5 next year (I believe). That would put his average for the next 2 years close to the current NFL HC average salary. Of course, his agent will be pushing for long term, or at least he should be.

These scenarios you guys are making up are dumb. Truth is he is gonna get a 3-4 year extension with a sizable raise. And he should, he has delivered one of the best coaching jobs, if not the best this year. Be thankful Richardson is very reactionary like Jerry Jones and let things pan out.. I think Ron has a lot of good years in him.

overall record is positive, but we need to have what we haven't had as a franchise, and that is a consistent winner. back to back winning seasons are a huge priority. he has to be able to deliver on that. it's not enough to be over .500, imo. he's done that with two losing seasons out of three and that's not a good thing. we need more than having a winning season once every three years or even once every other year. you have to know that is big on JR's list of priorities, esp. since that was the litmus test for fox at the end and the reason that he wasn't extended.

Gettleman will make the call to extend or replace. If he and Rivera aren't seeing eye to eye, they'll find a way to part.

You can't have back to back until you have one, you have to start somewhere. People want to make 4 seasons not in the playoffs to be the worst thing a franchise could possibly go through. We've got fans talking about hardships of 4 losing seasons. It's been 14 years for the Bills...1999, The  Browns and Raiders are at 11 with the Rams going 9. Any fan who even considers a change now deserves those types of teams.

I'm not really directing this at you but two losing seasons for a rebuilding coach is not the end of the world.

He grew up in a hurry this year.  I think the Buffalo game finally made him wake up.

He was a former player.  The players respect him for that.  He's been in the trenches before and knows what it takes.

We have to learn to take the good with the bad.  Sorry or later the Riverboat Ron Rivera mentality (which I like) is going to cost us a game.  But so far he has made the right decisions.

He deserves another 3 years.  I don't think he will ever lose his locker room.   Now if we get to the playoffs and it is one and done for 2 or 3 seasons that is a different story but so far he has earned this extension / new contract.

    • I’m keeping an eye on what the Hawks do with Boye Mafe. There’s a few young talented players that needs to be retained and one of their defensive starters might not fit within the budget. My guess is probably Riq Woolen is voted off the island but Mafe could be potentially too. His stats aren’t eye popping, but in McDonald’s defense, his role is to leverage for the DL to clean up. Mafe’s QB pressure rate is top notch and in a different scheme, he could clean up.    Just something to watch this weekend when SEA is in town.
    • Ok fair to judge only his starts.  But you do acknowledge that going from "he's waaaay above league average in a number of categories" to "here's a single stat where he's above league average (not "waaaay") and another where he is exactly at the league average" is a pretty significant backpedal, no?  I'm guessing he's probably in the ~10th range for completion percentage too if we're only looking at starts (I'm too lazy to isolate his starts and do the calculations), so I'll grant you that one too.  But I don't think completion percentage is all that meaningful as a standalone stat if it isn't bolstered by good TD%, Y/A, etc. On that note, for how much people like posting Passing Charts in here (*cough* CRA) - if you peep Shough's passing charts, he hasn't completed a single 20+ yard pass in the past 3 games combined.  His last one was in Week 13 against the Dolphins, which was a single pass of 24 yards.  I just want to be consistent in how we apply our standards - I think it's always been warranted to criticize Bryce for it (even dating back to his rookie season), but do we suddenly not care about that with Shough? And yeah I did acknowledge that Saints' fans have reason to be excited about him and complimented his poise, which is giving my props.  Still not sure I agree that he looks better than a "ton" of QBs nor do I think you or anyone have really demonstrated that.  I think you are generally one of the more reasonable level-headed posters which is why I'm confused at what I consider to be rather hyperbolic language about Shough.
    • I don't disagree with you, but want to point out that Tremble's strong suit has always been blocking. Case and point: on Horn's 25 yard run, he lays down not 1 but 2 nice blocks...and is looking for #3! https://www.panthers.com/video/jimmy-horn-jr-s-25-yard-run-gives-panthers-red-zone-access-on-first-drive
