roadtrip to wherever. where should i go

florida just isn't far away enough. and i don't want to be funneled down into a humid little peninsula. i want to be able to roam at will

Visit the third world poo hole know as Atlanta, Georgia. Be sure to arrive by noon on Sunday. Go to the " Dome" and find a scalper. Proceed to spend the next 3+ hours cheering for the best that the NFL has to offer. Very simple driving directions from Greensboro. Take I-85 South.

You would seem to be hampered this time of year by weather in the northern half of the country.  In the lower tier, New Mexico is somewhere I have wanted to explore but never have made it there.  Mostly the mountains like Mescalero and north.  Not sure your station wagon will make such a haul however

Ever been to the finger lakes in new york? Beautiful part of the country, great place if you enjoy wine, and lots of great camping and hiking spots. Watkins glen state park is a favorite of mine. You're two hours from Niagara and could cross over to Toronto.

key west, florida. yes key west itself is very touristy. but the drive there is fuging amazing especially if you get there right as the sun goes down.

 

ill never forget my trip there based solely on the scenery driving from island to island.

 

p.s. the freaks come out at night. but it is very entertaining.

Shawnee National Forest or Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area near Paducah, Kentucky. Kind of off the beaten path and not widely used this time of year.

 

Also somewhere along the Savanah River around Richard B. Russel Lake or Clarks Hill Lake, both right on the SC/Georgia border. Neither are that far and not too cold right now.

I went there for several years and had a timeshare back in the day of their popularity. Was really a great place until about 2006 or so when its popularity started increasing. It's way too expensive now and they keep trying to cram more hotel rooms into a limited amount of property.

 

The resorts were so crowded we started going to the local beaches and hanging out with island residents. Sure, you don't have someone waiting on you hand and foot, but you can relax all day under a divi tree and have some peace and quiet.
