Don't understand one thing. Can we not franchise him then trade him so we don't end up with any compensation don't know quite how all that works. Just hope we don't end with a peppers situation where he walks and we get nothing

Jared Allen was the last person i believe that happened too. the chiefs got a 1st and a 2nd i believe.

Star and Short should get better.....that will allow us to pair someone else with CJ and still remain beastly up front.

We need a RT, LT, RG, WR, CB etc. Those are starting needs.

Hardy is great but we need a more complete team

Hardy will get paid because he has earned it.  I suspect that we can keep it cap friendly in year 1 and 2.  By then the TV money will hit and give us some breathing room with Cam and Kuechly waiting in the wings. We have the cap room to sign him and keep most of the starters. Guys like Ginn and LaFell are more iffy as we don't know what it will cost to keep them versus picking someone up in free agency.

Is it better for a player to take 10 million and stay on a defense where he has the chance for his name to be on Sportscenter over and over and over because of his exploits gaining him tons of endorsements?  Or is it better for him to make 12 million and go to a team where he will struggle for the next 5 years because of the double teams and be out of sight/out of mind?

Julius? Julius Peppers, is that you? Are you still playing in the NFL?

There are currently only 5 teams with more cap space for 2014 than the Panthers as of noon today. I'm not worried about the Hardy situation alone, but how it will effect other needs, like resigning Derek Anderson, Ginn, LaFell, Florence, Mikell, Mitchell, Munnerlyn, Gano, Short, Wharton... assuming they stay.

while we're at it why not let Cam and Keek walk, too? Why hinder the team with lucrative deals?

cj's deal wasn't bad imo... we needed him

we need to pay our young stars, and hardy is one of them... but we're not gonna overpay him because DG doesn't seem to do that

Obviously you missed the part where I said "cams deal is coming up soon" and obviously I think we should resign keek but thats another 3-4 years from now and by that time both stewart and williams contracts will be off the books. Use your brain

25 years old, pro bowler, vastly outperformed his contract.  Lock him in, suck it up Jerry can afford it, when the time comes cut our running backs loose.  You can't let a core piece like Greg go.  Yes we have other pieces to sign, but a bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush, especially when talking about draft picks.

The window for our run has just opened, we still have Smitty, the time is now.

Luke is already in year 2 of a 4 year deal. Cam needs a new deal this offseason or one during the next season. You don't let him see the end of his.....gives him options a franchise wouldn't want him to have

You don't hinder a team by keeping the best players on it, Hardy is one of our best, we ought to do our best to re-sign him.  Obviously we don't want to overpay him, but I don't think CJ's deal is a hinderance to the team at all, and nor would Hardy's.

I'd be surprised if Cam allows an in-season contract negotiation. Does Gettelman even talk contract during the season? Does Richardson? I was under the impression the Panthers simply didn't talk contract during the season.

Luke isn't a free agent until after the 2015 season, so there's another 18 months to worry about him.

    • I'm going to be real, the reason that vote ended up so lop-sided by the end was directly due to my programming. So there's nothing tongue in cheek about it. Also I left PFF after the Collinsworth acquisition (didn't want to move to Cincy) but have stayed involved in analytics via backdoor channels, but I can absolutely say that the experience was eye-opening, not because those guys are unquestionable football savants and that I became one by proxy, but because the amount of information that becomes available outside of what the typical fan has access to is revelatory and also really drives home how much context is still being missed even with all of that information. You don't discover that you know everything, you discover how much you still can't know no matter how hard you try, hence my point about the NFL not being able to figure out what makes a QB good. There's a lot of AI work going into that now and even that only seems to further confuse things vs. actually enlighten the problem. In the professional realm teams don't really talk about quarterbacks as A strictly being better than B, but how A can potentially perform better than B given a specific context of C. Of course those contexts may be wider for A than B, but there's also contexts where B can outshine A, even with lesser talent surrounding them. So what good teams strive to do is ultimately define a process of how they want their entire team to operate under schematically, find players that fit that scheme, and hopefully find a guy whose skillset will be maximized running that scheme with those players. Where bad teams fall of the wagon is constantly shifting those schemes and chasing bad fits or fads vs. sticking with a core identity and developing it.
    • there is a 100 mile long list of NFL players and coaches going to bat and defending horrible play from teammates.
    • In 6 games, we've only had 6 hurries??? ... that can't be accurate
