Falcons prediction for 2014 NFC South rankings

Falcons owner Arthur Blank had a press conference yesterday, where he said

"I have every reason to believe we’ll go from last to first place in 2014"

May be a little premature to say this, ya think?

Ha.  Would have been newsworthy if he said ... "I have every reason to believe we’ll go from last to third in 2014"

Every owner would make the same statement.

Will be interesting to see what they do in the draft, replace Gonzalez or go OL with the first pick.  They need both.  Either way, poor Roddy should be required to catch 1000 balls per day from the jugs machine ... for the entire offseason.

Can't see the Falcons doing much next year unless they totally overhaul both their defensive and offensive lines.  They ignored the trenches for years in favor of getting edge players and it really cost them this year.

granted, just being a fan on the internet telling rival fans about how their FO is fuging up is basically just an online pissing contest because none of us actually have to write the checks or make the decisions.

but it's kind of neat how the other three rival fanbases in the division repeatedly warned falcons fans that this scenario was going to happen.  how loading up the skill positions while ignoring the trenches and trying to build a defense from the secondary in usually doesn't work and it's only a matter of time until the team becomes a house of cards.

Some of the other items from the presser:

  • He expects a quick turnaround in 2014
  • Believes that head coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff can get it done.
  • He expects a winning season and the playoffs or more changes would be forth coming.
  • He will continue to spend up to the salary cap to make sure the team is talented.
  • The search for replacements coaches (to replace some asst's that were fired) is under way. “Lots of coaches are anxious to come to Atlanta"
  • The Falcons will not take a skill position player with the 6th pick in the draft.
  • Blank hates “splash” moves and doesn’t plan to make any in free agency. He believes that “winning” sells tickets.

why call a press conference to say this, though?  screams of 'hey look at me! we're still here! pay attention to meeeeee!!!!'

btw...if he 'expects a winning season and playoffs' then he wouldn't add the 'or more changes are coming' part.  Sounds more like 'hoping for a winning season and playoffs' is what he was looking for.

    • We have without question one of the worst QB rooms in the league and your key concern is people having the audacity to be talking about it lol.
    • I saw this list crossing the screen waiting for any Panther.  Chubba, JC Horn and Hunt.  It was a crime to see so many that were not as good as these three.  ESPN is garbage anyhow.
    • Bingo!  We are on the same page.  Our scouting department was average under Hurney, but at least we hit hit it out of the park with our first rounders.  Our scouting department under Tepper's reign with his revolving doors of HCs and GMs has sucked because the scouts largely stay in place.  One or two may change every few years, but the core philosophy stays in place and I believe that to be heavily RAS influenced.    Looking the part of a football player (physical/athletic measurables) vastly outweighs putting on the tape and deep diving into his stats with our scouting department. Until we change that mindset, this team is doomed. Again, how many of us Huddlers (none of us are professional scouts) wanted McConkey over Legette? Yet, we went with XL.  Why?  RAS score, pure and simple.  If you put on the tape and look at the numbers without taking RAS into account, McConkey was the clear choice.
