After Cooling Down, The Overarching Question Remains: How Does Shula Keep His Job?

The team went 12-4 and went on a ridiculous run to end the season. Yeah, the offense sputtered in the second half and that was a major issue. But someone earlier mentioned "continuity" and that is a big thing in the NFL. Especially young teams on the cusp of making it.

Cam had an amazing year, and is still getting better. He did that this year under Shula, and that has to count for something. We also cannot forget that this was the first year in the playoffs for a vast majority of the players on this year. Anyone expecting Super Bowl with a lot of young players and first timers probably should have tapered the expectations a little bit.

Oh, and how could I forget 89 being hurt. After that first quarter, he really slowed down to the point where he could barely run a route in the second half. That was also part of the problem. It's not a coincidence that when Steve slowed down, the offense slowed down with him. And no one runs on the 49ers defense, so we had no choice but the air it out in the second half and the 49ers knew it.

The thing to ask is even if we had a formidable right line and weapons, is this offense an effective one to use Cam Newton in?

I just don't like our playbook.  It's not even about execution but the actual plays that our drafted up for this team.  We're clearly trying to be this mistake free/methodical/traditional style offense, yet we don't run misdirections, counters, and screens enough or at the right times.  And the routes our receivers have to run our either terribly executed, poorly planned, or a combo of both.  The lack of plays where a WR/TE catches the ball in stride on a slant or post is telling.  We just aren't able to score at will and that's a huge part of being succesful in today's NFL: scoring when you need to.

I like what it seems they're trying to do, but really don't like our OC or offensive personel outside of Cam, Kalil, our left OL and Tolbert.   This coming offseason will tell a lot about the offense Gettleman and Ron want to build.

I really glad none of the folks on here get to decide what happens to Shula or make any football decision. What passes for group think and generally accepted knowledge is amazing. Shula isn't going to be fired because he did a good job this year for his first as an OC in the NFL. Reminds me of those that wanted Rivera fired. Next year Shula will be better as will the team. Getting beat by the 49ers is hardly worthy of wholesale changes. Step away from the ledge. If anyone said we would get as far as we did when we were 1-3 you know we all would have taken it. Shula has done a great job with Cam and it will only get better.

And you know what a good NFL playbook looks like how? Sure have an opinion about football but when you act like an expert how about being one.

Then leave it at I didn't like his results. When you start acting as if you don't like specific plays you are acting as if you could do better. Or at least that is how it hit me. Nothing personal though.

It's cool.  I mean, I saw things and pointed out what I thought but don't see the "acting like I can do better part" bc I probably couldn't do better haha....but I'm still going to speak my mind rather than making dividing lines of which I can't critique past as a fan.  I don't think he needs to be canned this offseason but just really don't like what I saw given our offensive talent.  I liked what they were trying to do though.  The lack of playmakers and a line is definitely a part of this but not all in my opinion.

Looking back, I would probably cringe over the stuff I said in the Henning days lol.

Honestly outside of Cam and Olsen and our running backs where is this talent. I love Smitty but he is 34. Shula and Proehl took guys like Ginn and did more with him than anyone else had. No one would mistake our line or our receivers as top 20.

That's a big part why I'm ok with keeping him for 2014 but he needs to be under a fine microscope Gettleman and Ron.

Have an offseason for Gettleman-Rivera to corral the guys in to create a stud offense and see what Shula does with it.
