NFL Commish may do away with extra point

Honestly I have no problem with removing the extra point. Get 7 pts for td or go for 2 pt conversion and if you fail you get 6 pts.

Guys this simply just makes sense. How many peeps would actually miss the extra point kick. It is so pointless.

Nothing wrong with progression of a game. This is why MLB doesn't have replay - does it make sense to have replays for important plays? yes it does but why not change it? Because peeps dont want to change...

Honestly if you look at the history of our time we freaking went from slavery, racial equality, woman rights, gay rights in 150 yrs. Why change? Cause it makes sense and will make the future better.

This change will make the game better because it makes sense.

They've been talking about it since last season. Says it kills drama after a late score and adds to potential injuries

Week 2 in the 03-04 season the Bucs hit the touchdown on the late drive.  Extra point wins it for them, but we blocked it and won in over time.  It didn't kill the drama.  Best Panther game I've ever seen.

If the problem is that they are too automatic...

Kick it from the "X" marked where the ball is spotted after a touchback.

Or, if from further, from where the ball was last snapped. Imagine kicking a PAT from the 9 after LaFell's 91 yard TD a few years ago.

Same thing with 2 point conversions.

Us panther fans will always have that memory. However, Im pretty sure thats the only time in NFL history that a blocked extra point at the end of regulation caused OT or the other team to win. So im not sure 1 time in 1,000's of attempts means much. Also, i agree with you, i dont want it changed. Just saying, im not part of the committee that is voting on this. So I just expect the worst and was just stating what Ive heard/read.

I think this is amazing. The play is too pointless in the NFL, and it's boring as poo to watch.

Dallas would agree with you.    They lost a critical game against the Seahawks a couple years ago because the botched the extra point.

LEAVE IT ALONE.  If you drop the extra point you also have to drop the two point conversion.  Maybe we should do away with the safety too.   Fug it.  Drop the Touchdown and we can play for fun and nobody loses.

Wanna make a interesting put the extra point a 40 yds instead of a chip shot.   Going for two at the 5 instead of the 2.  That would be more challenging then getting rid of it all together.

I don't think Goodell is a great commish by any means but for those that think he is the reason the league is getting watered down you may want to brush up on your league rules history. Here are some rules that were implemented long before Goodell that he somehow is blamed for in peoples mind. Every sport evolves, if you are not progressing then there is trouble down the road.

Without looking it up, guess what year's these rules were put into place:

 - Rule changes were adopted to open up the passing game and to cut down on injuries.

-  Defenders were permitted to make contact with eligible receivers only once; the head slap was outlawed; offensive linemen were prohibited from thrusting their hands to an opponent's neck, face, or head; and wide receivers were prohibited from clipping, even in the legal clipping zone.

-  The NFL continued a trend toward opening up the game. Rules changes permitted a defender to maintain contact with a receiver within five yards of the line of scrimmage, but restricted contact beyond that point.

 - NFL rules changes emphasized additional player safety. The changes prohibited players on the receiving team from blocking below the waist during kickoffs, punts, and field-goal attempts; prohibited the wearing of torn or altered equipment and exposed pads that could be hazardous; extended the zone in which there could be no crackback blocks; and instructed officials to quickly whistle a play dead when a quarterback was clearly in the grasp of a tackler.

 - Rules changes placed greater restrictions on contact in the area of the head, neck, and face.

All were approved in the 1970's. I think if you look through this timeline, the NFL and it's rule changes are no different then they have ever been. It really is interesting to see when some of the rules specifically for player safety and to open up the offense and make things more exciting started . This entire list is pre Goodell.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
