Let's Change Some Rules

make penalties challengable and if a penalty didn't get called, allow it to be challenged as well.

wouldn't really need to add to the number of challenges, just allow penalties to be challenged in addition to the rest.

these refs need to be held accountable and their judgement be allowed to be called into question mid game to prevent their overall impact on the game itself.

until they become perfect in their officiating, they need to be challenged.

Honestly there is no way in the world they would allow a non call to be challenged.

It would be feasible/realistic to allow a call that was made to be reversed though....for example...you either grabbed a face mask or you didn't.

Holding and poo is literally on every play and wouldn't be one of the ones that could be challenged....goes back to the interpretation thing.

btw, i thought when the strike was over and the old refs came back things were supposed to be better.

i swear the replacement refs weren't worse than the regular ones...they all suck.

The answer will always be accountability.  Until these refs are held to a certain standard with real consequences to their actions/inactions we will be subject to an inferior product.  These guys have far too much impact on the game as it stands and really complicate a game.  This sport was designed to be a duel between two opponents not an exercise in rule interpretation.

i know, but that's still something i would change.

i have in mind the 49ers game...it wouldn't do us much good to challenge the penalties that we were flagged for and then say "well, you didn't call it on them when they did it". they need to be able to be called on everything.

that said, i don't believe that either one will change.

Well I'm not sure if you have had a chance to read this yet: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000315809/article/goodell-believes-penalized-hits-will-become-reviewable

But we may at least have a chance to get those reviewable....could have saved us in the 49er game at least on the Mitchell hit.....it was a tipped ball going right toward the receiver and Mitchell hit him....

Rule Change Priority #1- Eliminate any and all judgement calls. Refs have proven that those are just too hard for them to carry out with any consistency. If you can't justify eliminating them altogether then allow them to be challenged by the head coach and an independent rules consultant that is in the booth upstairs.

There's no way to completely eliminate the human element, or human error.

I agree about having a rules consultant present or accessible though.

nope. hadn't seen it. thanks. it's a start.

the thing is, it's not up to goodell like everyone thinks...it's the competition committee who decides which rule changes are going to be voted on by the owners.

for reference sake, here's the competition committee:

Chairman: Rich McKay (Atlanta Falcons)

- Jeff Fisher (St. Louis Rams)

- Stephen Jones (Dallas Cowboys)

- Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals)

- John Mara (New York Giants)

- Mark Murphy (Green Bay Packers)

- Ozzie Newsome (Baltimore Ravens)

- Rick Smith (Houston Texans)

- Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Talking to the media is not required

lol the media reaction to that would be hysterical.

remember all the bitching that went on when the players were locked out and the panthers practiced on their own, but didn't allow any press?

media doesn't like restrictions. the press thinks they are entitled to everything at all times and get real bitchy when they don't get their way.

Hey at least they'd be more compelled to do what they're best at, which is wild speculating
