The Perception of Luke Kuechly (outside of the Carolinas)

I did not expect Luke to win but he is clearly a transcendent player. He had a signature game late in the season to help win the Division. DPOY isn't just about stats. You have to break records to win DPOY on a losing team as far as I am concerned. Last year we heard the same nonsense about Bobby Wagner and Clay Mathews was saying Casey Hayward was robbed. Hayward was put on IR because of a Hamstring Injury after just 3 games and 8 tackles. Bobby Wagner had a quality season but garnered no consideration for awards this year.

Colts fans think Mathis should have won.

49er fans think Bowman should have won.

Seahawk fans think Sherm or ET should have won.

Rams fans think Quinn should have won.

Texan fans think Watt should have won.

Panther fans think Kuechly should have won.

Kuechly won,  so a lot of the fans of those other teams are b1tching out loud about it.

If Quinn won,  then most of those fans except for the Rams,  would be b1tching...  etc etc.

Since Kuechly was awarded the honor though,   we don't have to worry about the "WHAT IFs".     Then fug the fans of other teams.

Kuechly: 2012 DROY

Kuechly: 2013 DPOY

Kuechly: 2014 DPOY. (upcoming)

i really don't think it would have made a lot of waves if luke hadn't won.  there'd be some griping on this board but i don't think anyone would actually be truly pissed and bewildered like a lot of fans seem to be.  there wouldn't be this nationwide "what the hell was that" moment if he hadn't won.

it's more of a shock to me because the guys he beat out in bowman, quinn, thomas, etc. did put up what could be considered better numbers.  i know it's a totally intangible, un-quantifiable thing but luke passes the eye test in a ridiculous way and that may have put him over the top.  his management of the defense and play diagnosis is off the charts.

Panther fans think one of the above should have won

Fify.

I've never seen a bunch of "fans" discount their own players the way some here do. Kuechly absolutely deserved and earned this award. The kid is a stud and is already the best MLB in the game. Give him his props and fug those other guys.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
