Melvin White: Keep or cut?

I was sort of thinking about our cb position and wondering if we should invest a higher pick in the draft, or just look to supplement the position in FA.  Then that got me thinking about Melvin White.  There were a couple of games where he made some brilliant plays, and a couple of games where his lack of experience really showed up and he got exposed....as expected of a rookie.

Dave Gettleman has eluded to the " answer might already be on the roster" mantra.   Could Melvin White with some more development be that answer?   Overall for an undrafted rookie FA, I think we could all agree that he had a great season and overachieved in a lot of ways.   Will he continue to grow, or does he just not quite have the talent to be our starter next year?

Anyway, just interested to see what you guys have to say.  Have a great Superbowl Sunday everyone.

Go Panthers.

Go Huddle.

Edit:  I sort of asked the wrong question, because he cost nothing to keep.  I mean does his role greatly diminish or should he be the starter going into training camp?

pretty sure he was on a 1 year contract, so there is no cutting him.

only have to decide whether to re-sign him.

I hope we find someone better, but if not, he was a part of a very good defense.

3 years....most if not all UDFAs are 3 year contracts.

There is absolutely no reason to cut Melvin.

He's progressed from a depth slot to starter, so you could say he's made the grade.

That being said, it's also not a reason not to invest in more talent at the position.

It takes years to develop into a talented (much less an elite) CB.

You keep developing at a position and drafting into it until you "solve" it (aka Keeks).

Here's to another GettleTastic draft :)

Speaking of draft, my beer is getting warm..

    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
    • No We have been making excuses for him for 3 years, and we have gave him a hundred chances  Bryce is a bust, and we need to cut him now and stop wasting everyone's time
